Did Any of You Install a Trailer Hitch?

The Fit is my only car now, so I'm thinking of getting a hitch with a receiver to hold a bike rack or anything else. I'm wondering how it would affect a warranty claim, not that I think I'll ever have one. It's not supposed to pull a trailer, of course. It's one thing to pull a house trailer with it, but it's quite another to carry a bicycle.

Is there anything I should look for or avoid in a hitch?

Start reading at post #47 and later. I've already added the hitch, tow light unit, and electric brake controller for a full 7 way round connector. Likely going to order myself a 5x8 utility trailer this weekend.

Thanks for that. Which hitch did you get? etrailer shows three brands. What do mean by the tow light unit - the trailer wiring?

What is your biggest driver - cost or aesthetics? If you want an OEM look, the only one out there is made by Torklift Central. Otherwise, there are several out there that can handle what you're looking for.

All the part# are in that thread. I got the Curt hitch. I had to get the universal trailer wiring module since there is no plug and play with the 2015 FIT. I have pictures and video of the install. I should have the final video up soon for the brake controller

As a matter of fact the Fit CAN tow. Up to 1k without trailer brakes, and 2k with trailer brakes. Now one should install an aftermarket intercooler for the tranny to prevent overheating if hauling heavy loads. I do not plan doing that (for now) as I will not be hauling over 1k nor traveling cross country.

I like the idea of the Bike hitch.

I tried them - nothing available for the 2015 Fit - yet.

Hi SilverEX15,

Torklift does have one for the 2015 Fit, but I suspect their website hasn't been updated. Try looking at this discussion from about 6 weeks ago:

https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/3rd-...atibility.html

and follow the link from one of my replies to see the video from the Torklift Central website. It is the video of them installing the hitch on our 2015 Fit.

Good luck, and let me know if you have any questions about any of it.

As I added to the discussion you referred to, it would have been nice if someone had been following the installer around with the camera. At twice the price of other hitches, I don't see the advantage.

Brian, from RedLine Tuning, who emailed me yesterday thinks they don't have hitches for the 2015 Fit.

I might pull a lightweight Skidoo flatbed trailer. My riding mower has no trouble with it, so it shouldn't be a problem for the Fit. I'd also like to use it for a bike rack. As for aesthetics, any hitch will have the receiver showing, so that doesn't matter to me.

As I've mentioned previously, aesthetics were the most important to me. I also was going to have a hitch made for me no matter what because I already owned the 2" hitch-mount bike carrier, and was not interested in using adapters or extensions to make it work.

This hitch almost disappears below the bumper fascia (and has the most elegant attachment design), whereas all the others hang far below.

So far, all the things I've done to our 2105 Fit are meant to look really subtle and possibly OEM (tint, VG shark fin, etc.).

The cheaper one is not very reliable. Undersized relays for incandescent lights. The universal one is much better. I installed this unit. Have to use scotch locks to tap into the wires but it works very well.

Thanks. I ordered the better one. I don't like so clip-on connectors. I strip he wire and solder the wire on.

My hitch will be probably be shipped this week, and I just got an email with a PDF of the installation manual - excellent service from Torklift.

I got the Reese hitch and the Curt wiring sitting at work waiting for time and temperatures to let me slap them on.

Looks good! I have the wiring, and the hitch will be here on Saturday. The only problem is that it's about 18° outside now. I can do the wiring piecemeal, but the hitch will have to put one all at once.

Yeah glad I got all my wiring done. I have the Monroe Max-Air struts ready to go in too, but I need to wait for better weather too. Will be very handy to adjust ride height with a loaded trailer. 16° weather here in CT and without a garage to work in isn't exactly ideal.

I removed the panels to get at the wiring, but there seem to be several yellow and green wires. I'll have to check and see which are which.
