Help with choosing coilovers

There has not been a lot of activity in the GE8 coilover thread, so I figured I would just ask outright.

I am shopping for some coilovers and am trying to decide between a few options.

I am trying to keep the purchase under $900 (new) or $700 (used).

So far these are my options:
D2
Ksport
Apexi
Form&Function type 2
Tein basis
Buddy Club

I am leaning toward the F&F due to the more streetable inclination of them (and the very high amount of adjustablity in ride height).

I know there will be suggestions to the Redshift Koni setup or the KW and Higher end Tein setups as well, but they are just out of my budget.

I woul dlook to the entry level Fortune coilovers. Of the ones you have listed they are mostly the same assembly. I have had the best experience with Tein of those listed. That is largely due to their service.

I have seen a LOT of returned and rebuilt F&F, D2 and Buddy Club.

What is your goal with the coilovers, what are you doing with them and why do you want coilovers. This has a lot to do with selection.

Main goal is the stance of my car. My shocks are all bad (83K miles with Tein S springs), so rather than spend a fortune on some Konis and still have the same stance, I would rather make it adjustable.

My car is mostly a DD with the occasional run up Palomar Mtn (I live at the base of it ).

D2 and Ksport are the same, so why are we not seeing a larger number of Ksport failures?

Most coilovers are failing because people are putting them at there lowest possible ride height then not bothering to adjust the struts themselves

For DD and canyon use honestly i'd say save up an extra couple hundred and get the Bilsteins. I've never been up Palomar but if it's anything like all the other canyons i've been on from LA to SF it's best to have a compliant suspension... IMO hard springs are your enemy up there unless it's glass smooth.

You won't be hellatoiletflush superstance bboy status but the car will DRIVE. Just depends on what's more important to you.

Because we don't sell as many Ksport coilovers. I agree, that is some of the cause of failure. However, I have seen plenty of failures and premature wear on most "budget minded" coilovers that are properly set as well.

I recommend the Fortune ones for budget due to my experience with build quality and the service. If something does go wrong it is easy to have them rebuilt in the US with minimal down time.

Paging 1SickVeilsideZ... paging 1SickVeilsideZ

Good review and everything he says in the first post makes sense to me as far as the shock design and all that. It's definitely gotten my attention and put them on my radar. Helper springs are nice too.

5k front 4k rear which are perfect rates for daily IMO as long as the shocks are up to it, which I would assume these are since they're mated. They don't look to be adjustable but for daily that's fine since you won't be swapping spring rates or anything.

Ok, I am down to the FFv2, Buddy Club, and the Tanabe Sustecs.

I have yet to hear from Sickveilside on his, and just see so many reviews that are very polar in reaction (love vs. hate) for each of them.

I am leaning toward the Tanabes but worry that I may be running near the bumpstops if I choose too low of a ride height.

I also like the FFv2 in that they are a fully rebuild-able dual tube design, but I worry that the 8k/6k spring rates are just too much for the GE8 chassis.

I would go with the Fortunes, but they have been discontinued.

I absolutely think that's too much for daily on a GE. But if you want to go low/flush you'll need that stiffness, just live with the ride. Kind of at a crossroads here and need to decide if you want civility/street usability or to look cool. Nothing wrong with either, just need to decide one way or another.

I'm sitting on BuddyClubs, currently at about 20k on them. The sole complaint I have about them is the dust covers for the shock on the fronts, they're complete crap. Other than that, they're good with me. Whether I have the car sitting higher for the occasional canyon or when it's maxed out to be an attention hoe, they serve me well.

go with the Buddyclub's, you won't regret it. They're great for daily, touge, and track. Doesn't hurt that you live in Socal and they're located in Socal too.

Had this been a month ago, I probably would have hit you up. I ended up going with the Tanabe Sustec Pros. I am very happy with the ride and am glad I cant go super slammed as I probably would.
