Clutch slipping at 35k miles... HELP!

Hi Everyone. The dealer confirmed that I need a new clutch on my 2013 Sport. When I push down the gas even mildly hard on the freeway in 4th or 5th gear, my RPMs rev as if I'm pushing down the clutch.

I don't drive the car hard and there is no reason it should need replacing at 35k. I'm the original owner.

Any suggestions to not have to pay $1700? It's still under my lease but it's not covered by warranty. Could Honda pay for it? Is another clutch better? Did I buy a lemon?

Thank you!!

Thank you for moving it. I'm leasing it. Had it for two years.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Obviously the clutch shouldn't be slipping so soon, yet the guys at the dealership can't help.

Thanks!

Usually premature clutch wear is caused by faulty driver technique—such has riding the clutch (driving with one's foot on the pedal when not shifting) or failing to fully disengage the clutch when shifting/stopping. While it's possible that there's some fault with the clutch or its mechanism, it would probably be very difficult to demonstrate that's the problem rather than technique unless there's some obvious problem they discover when replacing the clutch.

What sort of driving do you typically do? At about 17k miles per year, it seems like it's more likely highway than stop-and-go city driving. Clutches do not last as long in city driving for obvious reasons—they're used a whole lot more per mile than when going down the freeway where one may not touch the clutch for a hundred miles.

I had a manual before and never had this issue. I'm 99% sure I know how to properly drive a stick. Hmm...

If it were you, would you buy an OEM clutch and have it installed at a local Honda shop? I feel that even if someone raced a Fit and was a horrible driver, 35K for a new clutch seems really premature. Thoughts?

It's a wear item. It sounds like the mechanism is working fine but the wear surface is too worn, and it's lasted too long to sound like it was defective. I'd replace it with OE or equivalent because the "upgrades" tend to be racing oriented, too grabby to be an improvement for a daily driver.

You had a manual before. For how long? How long ago? What kind of car or truck? Different rigs with different engines and gearing take different styles.

Mine is slipping at 25k in my 13, I've had issues with my clutch since day 1 when it wouldn't disengage all the way after a 60 mile drive home from the dealr and have been fighting Honda about it since all they did was replace the slave and master after the clutch was already toast. This is the first car I haven't gotten 100k or more out of a clutch on and am pretty disappointed about that.

Sounds like a driver issue unfortunately.

Clutch slipping and replacement problems

I am sorry you are having these problems. I have been driving a clutch for over 30 years. My Honda Fit 2013 initial clutch problems occurred at 7k miles, 10k miles, 23k miles, and 37k miles. Honda appears to be blaming the driver. On all my other vehicles, I always changed the clutch after 100k miles.

Hi Everyone, The dealer said the same thing new me when my clutch failed at 7,000 miles, 10,000 miles and 2 more times after this. I have been driving a clutch for over 30 years. These are mostly highway miles. Received 100,000 miles plus with my other vehicles. Maybe it may be a good idea to seek legal?

It appears after reading responses about this clutch issue, it is the current models of Honda Fit vehicles that are causing problems.

I am wondering if Honda uses the same clutch part or technology compared to vehicles 10 years ago?

Are you... lost?

You responded to a thread created some 3-1/2 to almost 4 years ago, about a model generation that initially came out 11 to almost 12 years ago. It was 12 years ago if you consider the release in its home market of Japan... and then say "compared to vehicles 10 years ago". Right...

You try to blame Honda and mention "seek legal"... well, for one thing, just HOW MANY clutch failures have you actually seen?

I have a 2010 Honda Fit, the same generational version as the 2013. I replaced my clutch at 165k, and I readily admit I'm not kind to it.

And yes, my 2010 Fit uses the same part for the clutch as the 2013 Fit.

You say you've been "driving a clutch for 30 years"... maybe that's the problem? Well, to be clear, I mean there are some folks that have certain habits and tendencies so ingrained that, when asked to do something else, they can't. Is it possible that those "30 years" have been on clutches that released at different points and you just didn't adjust for it on the Fit?

I learned to drive a manual transmission some 24 years ago and drove it for about a year before mainly driving an auto. That was until 2010, when I bought my Fit. So I had to relearn how to drive with a stick shift and clutch. More importantly, I threw away any claim that I "knew how to drive a manual" so that I could adjust to it.

This thread answers so little questions and raises so many more.
what happened to OP's leased fit?
why did dudly respond twice with virtually the same response worded slightly differently?
is there really a systemic problem with the 2nd gen clutches?
will baby yoda use the force to shake a wooly rhino again?
