Valve Inspection Intervals?

Got the ESM from the bittorrent in another thread on this forum... am I reading this right?

I have to inspect the valve clearance every 25,000 miles on this thing?

My answer is based on the manual that's icluded for the GE8, which suggests vavle adjustments at around 100k miles or when the valves are noisy, whichever comes first I guess.

See, that's how I initially interpreted it too, until I read the ESM. Here's what the manual says:
Adjust the valves during services A, B, 1, 2, or 3 only if they are noisy.
After reading the ESM, I now interpret this as "don't touch the valves during A,B,1,2,3..... but adjust them at 4. Which means every 25k you're opening that valve cover.

4 Reads:
Inspect valve clearance

25k seems wayyy too short for me, but I'll do it if no one has any other ideas?

25k doesn't seem to jive with the advertised "no maintenance for the first 100k miles" but i wouldn't put it past them to try and pretend valve adjustments don't count.

Z06dustin & seconsspassed,

I'm not sure if "4" is specifically at 25k miles as the MM bases' these maintenance intervals depending how you drive. Again I am not sure if "4" is at 25k.

With these contradictions between the Honda Manual and the ESM, maybe you can do it every 30k.

In my case, I adjusted my valves at 18,5xx miles as the dealer that I went to didn't think my car needed an adjustment even though they heard it. They told me that the valvetrain noise is definitely there but it's not enough to be considered that an adjustment is needed. So I ditched the warranty claim route and adjusted it myself as it was annoying me. BTW, my car is a GE8.

Talk about the 100k valve adjustment right? LOL. It definitely is an adjustment if there's noise. I think 30k is a good interval to be on the safe side if your valves are not making any noise. It's long enough so as not to cause inconvenience but short enough to be sure that you are on top of things. Even if your valves are not making noise, it is best to check them so that you can be sure that none of the valves are too tight and in a worst case scenario, your valves will not close completely and risk valve damage.

I'm sure you guys already know the risks I illustrated above, just made a slight elaborate response on why I think 30k miles might be a good/descent interval.

I went to my dealer for the windows switch recall and the advisor said ''Don't do anything except if they are noisy!! Given the fact that exhaust valves tend to get tighter clearances over time, i would check them at every 60k!! I'm gonna do mines someday soon as they begin to slap a little when cold!! At 62k km...

Ok so next question, when performing the inspection how to you rotate the engine? If it's anything like the engines I've worked on in the past you can "bump" it close to TDC but how do you get it to exactly TDC? Doesn't seem to be a good wrench point on the balancer.

How i do it is to remove the spark plugs and put a long but small piece of wood thru it (Wood won't scratch pistons and i don't know how to tell ''Gougon'' in english but you get the picture... :P) When you turn the crank with a torque bar on the damper bolt the piece of wood will raise and then momentarily stop mooving upward... you are at TDC but you have to be sure all the valves are closed... With the valve cover removed, it's easy to see!!
