My suggestion would be to use a Quick tap Wire splice connector instead of soldering or twisting wires together. It is good for tight spaces, Protects the connections and is easy to use. Plus under changing temperatures sometimes electrical tape if not the self bonding kind will come off.
Taping into the ground wire (black in this case) isn't always convenient ... Some places it is easier to just use a ground lug to the ground of the vehicle.
