Help with speakers?

I’m wanting to upgrade speakers but can’t find the Polk Audio DB651 that some of our fellow freaks are using and Crutchfield’s website says that they won’t fit my doors. Does anyone know what the deal is?

First, do you have stock OEM head unit or aftermkt?

Second, what are your goals for the system? Clear sound, clear, loud sound? Subs? Amps?

Those Polks have a very bulbous tweeter. My hunch is, it will press against the stock grilles if you do not trim the grilles to clear the tweet? The stock door spkrs are midranges, and if you add a tweeter in that location, you'd be better-off disconnecting the dash tweeters.

I would go with a component set, and replace the tweets and midranges, but only if I had an aftermarket head unit 1st.

I currently run stock front speakers in my 09, with a Pioneer Avic Z1 head unit/nav. It sounds great with the high-pass crossover at 80hz, and a 10" sub box/60w amp pumping-out the lows. If I decide to upgrade the front speakers, I will drop components in and re-wire them properly.

Most folks are amazed when I tell them I run stock speakers in my system. They sound damn good for such wimpy spkrs. The dash tweeters are in an awful location and don't really afford the listener with a solid stereo image, but they can be dialed-in sound pretty decent.

Currently I have an OEM headunit wprking on getting the double din.

My plans for the system are clear and loud, but I’m eventually wanting to add a sub and amp.

What’s another good aftermarket headunit?

Oh, man, you're in luck. There are literally dozens out there.

We just did a Pioneer double-DIN in a Highlander. I think it was $119.00 for the radio on sale @ Crutchfield, and they included a $39 amp bypass cable and the dash kit for free. It was cheaper than eBay by like $15!

I believe it was the MVH-600BS Pioneer. It's around 99 dollars at Best Buy, but after you add all the installation gear, it's more than Crutchfield with the same gear.

It is "mechless," meaning no CD player, but these days, even my old-fashioned butt has my CDs ripped to my Droid.

If you spend around $300, you can find a full touch-screen unit. Even Dual and some of the cheaper brands have come a long way.

The Avic Z1 I have is actually a dinosaur. I only keep it because it refuses to break...lol. When the Avic dies, I will use a Pioneer like the MVH 600, and use my 4g Android as the screen/main source. Until then, I can at least play DVDs to shut the kids up...lol.

The MVH has plenty of crossover settings for amps, front and rear and sub outs, and decent power on its own.

If your single-din has multiple outputs and an AUX input, Bluetooth, etc, you can also use an Android as your screen, and even flush-mount it in the double-DIN opening. (Lots of these on YouTube.)

I take it install is pretty straight forward? Also where do you keep your sub at? I’m wanting to keep some of the space because I do use it for a good bit of hauling around parts and what not

Yes! The hardest part for me was using an existing hole for the power cable to the amp.

I wanted to run it down drivers side, but I wound-up using the passnger side instead.

My sub box is removable, for now. To optimize space, I plan to make a baffle and use the spare tire area for airspace, but I really like my sub, and taking it out is a ten second job, really.

It’s nice to know that most of this will be straight forward and easy. I’m hoping I’ll be able to start a build thread soon
