Can the dead pedal be removed?

I'm very close to buying myself a Fit; I'd like to purchase an '09 or newer. The only thing I don't like about the ones I've driven is the dead pedal. I find it awkward and uncomfortable. I'm almost considering going for an '07 or '08 instead because of it.

I didn't think to really look at it up close when I was at the dealer and I haven't found anything conclusive online; is it possible to remove the dead pedal? If so, what are you left with? A big hole in the carpet? Anyone have any idea?

I thought it was part of the inner wheel well metal, like the plastic part of the pedal was just sitting on metal, but don't hold me to it...

The shop manual provides instructions for removing the footrest (dead pedal). It's held in place by two clips and a pin. You can pry at the gap on the left side of the footrest to remove it . Based on the manual drawing it looks like you will have two openings in the carpet under the footrest, maybe 2"x 2".

The only problem I see with removing it is where would you rest your left foot other than on the same area?
