Vent Control Dial and A/C

Hey, when the vent control dial is set to windshield or windshield/floor vents and with the fan on i've realized that A/C is automatically turned on even without explicitly pressing the A/C button. The manual seems to confirm this (p.120). The question is, since the A/C is on shouldn't the little green A/C LED on the button switch on as well in this case? Or does the green light ONLY turn on if you have the button pressed?

Secondly, this only seems to happen only when my temp control dial is set to the coldest position. Does anyone know if the A/C is on in the other positions (second coldest, third coldest, etc)? I usually drive early morning when its cool so I can't really tell.

I hadn't realized this until I was driving a couple days ago in the rain and had the vents to windshield and it was cold. It wasn't until I got home where I realized the AC button was off the entire trip, but it was cool in the cabin.

My car is a 2012 Sport MT btw.

The compressor runs when defrost is selected (either position) without iluminating the A/C indicator. This is common on most if not all car makes (positive about this on GM, Ford, Toyota, Subaru, Madza, Nissan, and Honda)

No, it will run no matter what position it is in, it is meant to be used for defrost, so can be used on "warm". The compressor puts out dry air, which aids in defrosting the window, which is why it turns on.

The temp dial has no effect on the a/c. It only controls the ratio of "hot" vs "cold" air.
