AT Paddle Shifter "Bapping"

I drive a 2012 Sport AT and I usually drive using the paddle shifter. I find that i get better mileage than using the D automatic mode and get around 30-32 mpg for my driving conditions going around 55-65 mph.

I was searching around and i found this thread at ecomodders.

"Short-shifting" a Jeep Patriot automatic CVT (forcing an early "upshift") saves gas - Fuel Economy, Hypermiling, EcoModding News and Forum - EcoModder.com

Basically, they say that by "bapping" the shifter up while accelerating, it will change gears while keeping ur revs at the minimum. With this method, I have been able to achieve 38.1 mpg so far and i'm still on half a tank of gas. Mind you, that this is the first tank i'm trying so far. So we shall see how this goes.

Anyone else willing to try this? and post here your results!

I know that one fuel-up is not conclusive, but compared to my previous fill-ups this has been the best. No difference in driving speed and style, just "bapping" the paddles to shift as early as possible. Right now I'm at 37.7 MPG with recent fill-up.

Hey Ryun

I do this bapping thing all the time and it does little use. I noticed better mpgs when I slowly accelerate and take my time on driving. I keep the fcd over 40 as much as I can. I'm getting about the same as yours but its summer time so that is expected.

sweet. i used to follow the shifting recommendations on the manual book. i just take my time accelerating when there is no one behind me.

xxryu139x, my experience with "short shifting" is in agreence with kitkit. That practice alone has not yielded much difference for me. However, in addition to "bapping," smooth acceleration, limited braking, early lane changinging, etc., will contribute to better mileage. Take a few more readings, then share your results.
I too have been getting 10% better mpg recently with no changes in driving. I am thinking fuel formulas have changed recently.

fill-up #2 is 35.5 MPG. experienced traffic several times on the highway and some more stop and go city traffic. still a big increase from what i regularly get.

I take my time accelerating whether or not there is someone behind me. I generally stay in the right-hand lane (if there is one) and drive close to or under the speed limit. I used to get mad at the behavior of other drivers. Inconsiderate things like not using turn signals, passing on the right, etc. My Fit has helped me become a much more serene driver as I strive for the best gas mileage I can.

I don't have an auto, but i have a bullydog driving coach, and if i do what it says i can net 38+ mpg in my M/T, if i shut the car off at any stoplight i know i'll be at for atleast a minute, i can easily get over 40 and that's 70city/30hwy.
it really is sloooooooooooooow accelerating and i've learned to coast a lot before braking when possible, i basically just drive really chill and don't get i a hurry and that in it's self has helped my MPG the most!
i miss my paddles in my 07

a little update. last few fill ups hasnt been as high as the first one, however i've been seeing 33-37 mpg per tank. a bunch of those tanks, i've seen alot of bumper to bumper traffic during the summer weekends, and a little more aggressive driving.

changed a couple of things. the distance of your daily commute really makes a difference in having a more accurate and better mpg. i've started to hit the gym 3x a week after work. total commute after work has gone from a total of 11 miles to about 30 miles. driving late at night also means less traffic and the new highway ive been driving on, even though are stop lights every block or so, its easier to mitigate coasting when they are red. i've also been free to waver from 50-55 mph while on a highway without too many asshats tailgating me.

i do use the paddles alot. before i've been keeping it at 2nd gear at stop lights, now i just drop it to 1st and "bap" it thru all the gears when accelerating. i find that my mpg drops less at stop lights at 1st gear. i guess thats just makes sense. i'm trying to get into more of a habit of popping into neutral at long lights.

another thing i have discovered is, that sometimes its better to accelerate quicker (not quickly) to highway speeds rather than grandma accelerating. i find that my mpg drops more trying to get to highway speed very slowly. get it up there quickly and then pop it to 5th gear and i can gauge the mpg meter to the 40+ ticker.

i've managed a 37.6 mpg this last fill up. it could have been higher (38ish) if i didn't get caught in bumper to bumper traffic one afternoon.

my running mpg has gone from 27 mpg to 34.3 now. lifetime average is 32 mpg and its still gradually going up. average mpg for the 7 fillups since i started doing the paddle bapping is 35.57. =)

not bad for stock wheels and a 100lb subwoofer box. i'm pretty satisfied with my mpg results now. anyone else got any other useful tips they have learned on their quest to boost mpgs?

Yes this, get up to speed quickly and cruise in 5th if you know you're not going to be stopping again in 100 feet for another light. If you will be, that's when it's useful to do the grandma acceleration. Added bonus is that next light might change by the time you get there and you won't have to stop completely.

There's more than one way to skin a cat, that's just what I do (if i'm conserving gas)

.....

Been doing that since I started driving... get up to speed quickly when entering the hwy. DSM mentioned it too in some threads.

I don't even try to play the mpg game anymore... after over 4.5 yrs of ownership, I have an idea where I'll be at depending on the routes for that fill up.
The most I ever got for a tankful was 43.4mpg and that was at 60-70mph avg speeds, I was drafting a few trucks here and there... the least I got was 23.8mpg (90% Manhattan driving), not bad for having to stop for red lights every 500-1000 feet. If it wasn't for all the stop signs/traffic signals I'd be easily 35mpg + every fill.

Another thing I noticed is when I shift high 5k+ rpms (I got an MT) I get better mpg's for the tank.
