iPod Touch "Unsupported"

iPod Touch "Unsupported"
I am going NUTS with this--I plug my iPod Touch (5th gen) into the lightning cable I have plugged into the USB port in the glove box. Sometimes it works perfectly, sometimes it won't load and flashes "unsupported" on the radio display, or most annoyingly, it loads at first and starts playing just fine, and THEN starts flashing "unsupported" if I jostle it even slightly laying it in the glove compartment and shutting the door.
Anyone else have this problem, or even better, solve it? It's driving me CRAZY. I hadn't realized until I got a car just how much I hate modern radio--too many ads and the same three songs over and over. I've got a great music collection, and I want to listen to it in my car.

I thought I got the right aux cable,, but maybe I didn't. Can someone recommend the right one, preferably eligible for Amazon Prime? I would rather pay a little more for the cable to get the fast free shipping, I have a road trip coming up and I need some reliable tunes.

Just any cable with the headphones type plug on BOTH ends is what you need. One end into the headphone jack on the iPhone, the other into the AUX input.
RE: iPhone 5 issues from what I've read in other areas, has to do with the lightning cable. Apple has had a problem with those cables, hence that when someone above got another one, it fixed the problem, where as another person, the problem continued. Chances are, you got another bad cable, cause there are reports of people getting SEVERAL bad replacement cable before finally getting a decent one. Since the lightning cable has been out now for almost a year, I'd think Apple has finally got a handle on the problem. Maybe try another lightning cable.
**Update**
Tried my shift partner's iPhone 5 and his lightning cable and no issues here. Stereo recognized it no problem, so I'd say get yourself another lightning cable, since that seems to be the real culprit rather than the phone.

iPhone 4, here, in my '10 Sport. I have the same issue periodically. Turning off the stereo and back on doesn't solve it. Unplugging the phone at the phone end of the cable doesn't solve it. Unplug at the adapter end (in the glove box), and mine always comes back. Could be my cable, could be an issue with the stereo, I don't know. But, it's not annoying enough, doesn't happen often enough, to complain about it much.
If you're having issues, try that. Unplug the cable at the adapter end, plug it back in, and see if that solves the problem.

My ipod touch (4gen) just stopped working at all in the usb dash port . I changed out the cables and made sure the cables work in other devices and no luck. My iphone 5 with lightning cable still works. Ipod touch won't charge in the dash port either. I used to have some issues with sporadic loss of contact with the stereo (unsupported message) that were solved but turning on and off and/or unplugging and plugging back in, but it always charged. Aux cable works but doesn't charge. I don't even know where I should take it for a fix - honda dealer is expensive. Any ideas (honda fit sport 2009).

Since your iphone 5 still works, this sounds more like a problem with the Ipod touch. Perhaps a software upgrade made it incompatible. I'd switch to a $10 USB flash drive and leave it in. Constant connecting/disconnecting wears connectors and might zap something.
If the USB interface is bad on the Honda, a new one runs about $150. I'm sure there are a lot of used ones available with people upgrading their factory heads. I'd probably pop in a new aftermarket head before trying to repair the factory radio.

Thanks for the reply. The weird thing is that I have no problems with the ipod touch in any other way - all my other docks and devices are cool with it. I tried reset etc. And a new cord. The usb interface has always been not up to par. I am loathe to shell out 150 + labor if it isn't going to work, but I guess I don't have much of a choice

not unless you wanted to. It's pretty much plug and play. Crutchfield includes the adapter faceplate for your Fit for that price. Installation is easy, but wouldn't cost much at a stereo shop.
That model doesn't include pre-amp outputs for a subwoofer, the JVC for $20 more does. If you want to upgrade later probably better to get this one now.

I use a $10 USB flash drive with the factory radio. No experience with the JVC unit but it looks respectable for the price.
edit: one thing to check before making the leap to an aftermarket radio is if it is compatible with your steering wheel controls. Crutchfield sells wiring harness adapters for this, but they aren't cheap ($80) and may not give full functions. Sorry, there's a downside to everything...

+1 on the usb flash drive. My iphone5 sometimes causes problems. But i prefer keeping a stick with prac my whole music collection. What buggs me is trying to organize the folders and files. I have yet to figure out which part of music tags allow the files to play in order.

For those of you who didnt overpay with apple products, an aftermarket stereo sounds so much better and has better options.
