The Fit is toast.

Golf ball sized hail did her in, I'm afraid. $9000 damage, and she only has 39K miles. Mechanically she's still perfect, but it looks like the insurance company is going to total her.

Picked out her replacement tonight. This will be the first non-Honda vehicle I've purchased in over 20 years. I hope it turns out to be as good of a car as the Fit was. It's a lot of car for only $25K.

RIP sweetheart. You were the best car I've ever owned.

$9000 in hail? Wow. Guess I won't complain about snow as much.

The Scion is pretty slick though.

It was hard enough convincing the wife to go for the F-RS. I just can't justify the extra $3000 for the interior in the BRZ. Plus, several reviews I've read actually prefer the handling of the F-RS better. It's a little smoother, which will be nice for a daily driver.

We don't have many Subaru dealers here, so the selection is a lot slimmer too. It's been hard enough to find the Scion with a manual tranny. Why anyone would put an automatic in a car like this is beyond me.

@Codi, surprisingly the $9000 damage doesn't look all that bad. But almost every body panel but the tailgate was hit, and much of it can't be PDRed. I've got a coworker offering me $5500 for it as a first car for his daughter. They are going to drive it as-is. It'll be a great car for that price. It easily has another 160K miles left in it.

This is the only thing that has to be fixed. It knocked out the windshield washer nozzle.

wow sorry to hear about your fit. honestly though it doesn't look bad at all. atleast not $9k bad. new hood and couple side moldings and just use a mallet on the roof and pretty much cant tell.

I too saw more reviews saying that the BRZ has better handling than the FRS.

What is the salvage value that the insurance company wants for you to keep the car? I would buy it in a heart beat to drive as a backup / second car if the price is right. I'm not to proud to drive a hail dented car. Unfortunate they will not allow anyone other than to owner to buy it outright. Everyone else has to go through the auction (usually Copart). I have a friend that put 160,000 miles on a hail dented Pontiac Vibe that he bought back from the insurance company for a few hundred dollars. I tried several times to buy it from him but he refused.

Still waiting for that final determination. The last adjuster said at least $5000, but wanted to go over it with his superior first. They are having difficulty figuring the replacement value too, because of the low mileage. Just under 40k on a 2009. Book value is $12,500 before any adjustment for mileage. I'm hoping to get the final numbers from them Monday. If my buddy passes on it, I intend to offer it here before putting it on CL.

Even if they don't total it, I'm thinking about selling it anyway and using the settlement to buy the Scion. At least that way it would not have a salvage title.

And BTW, it has a brand new set of Continental DWS 205/50's on it. Just had them installed mid-April.

It also has a PRM Racing CAI, and I still have the original airbox that I'll send with it.

Plus carpeted floor mats and brushed aluminum pedals. The interior is pristine, except for a small spot worn in the carpet on the driver's side of the console near the gas pedal, where apparently I push out with my foot when I exit the car. No spots or tears of any kind in the seats. Vacuumed, you can hardly tell it from new.

I have all maintenance records, and have only used Amsoil synthetic in it.

This thing was my baby, and I obsessed over every little door ding and rock chip. That's why I can't stand to look at it all banged up like this. It breaks my heart.

That stinks! Too bad.

On the BRZ vs FRS -- the reviews have been consistent in describing the suspension differences. The BRZ is set up for a little more understeer. That's probably a good thing since Subaru owners are NOT used to having a car snap oversteer - it just doesn't happen with a FWD-biased AWD system. The Scion supposedly will break the rear end loose easily. For many people that's appealing. Just keep that in mind.

The only other real difference is the interior. The Subaru is more plush and the stereo is supposedly acceptable, unlike the unusable Scion one. I'm not sure which one I'd pick. Scions are so bare-bones inside, I really dislike them. But that's why they're all such good deals. Even the TC, which is not at all I sports car even though their owners might think so, is an interesting mashup -- it has a big 4cyl out of a Camry and is smaller than a Corolla.

5'9", 180. Wife is 5'4", 115. Son is 7 y/o. Daughter is 17, and has her own 2009 Civic 4 door, so that's available if we need to haul the family, plus the wife drives an Odyssey.

I have hail damage on my Fit also. I took my $4000 check, put it in the bank, and rejoiced. My high milage '07 just gave me $4000 towards it's replacement, one of these days. My wife got $3500 from her Madza 3, and I got $2000 from my 2001 Xterra. pretty good pay out for a few dimples.

Most insurance companies total out a vehicle at or around 75% to 80% of what the vehicle is worth. So at 12k the total out amount is 9k. So it is more than likely right at or around the border line of totaling out. There is a lot of work there that would have to be done to get it back to its original state. GL!
