Manual Transmission questions
#21
I'm definitely in the "shift by feel" camp. The Fit's engine likes to be revved rather higher than many others.
For what it's worth, my (2012 USDM) owner's manual recommends these shift points for the manual transmission:
1 --> 2 at 15 mph (24 km/h)
2 --> 3 at 27 mph (44 km/h)
3 --> 4 at 39 mph (63 km/h)
4 --> 5 at 53 mph (85 km/h)
I think I shift a little earlier than these most of the time, though of course it depends upon the terrain and how unexcitingly I'm driving.
The clutch pedal doesn't have a whole lot of feel. The floaty throttle is a bit annoying. The fact that the floatyness is reduced when the AC compressor is running (and so becomes less predictable with the AC engaged) is also a little annoying. Nevertheless, it's one of the better shifting cars I've driven, though I suspect no match for a Miata in that regard—as is probably true for most cars affordable by mere mortals.

If you follow the owners manual for a nice balance between efficiency and power you should shift from 1st to 2nd at 15 mph, 2nd to 3rd at 27 mph, 3rd to 4th at 39 mph, and 4th to 5th at 53 mph. I shift pretty darn close to that and it feels right. It ends up being between 3 to 3.5 thousand rpms.

Hi everyone,
I am a soon-to-be new Fit owner. I put an order down for a 2013 Fit DX-A yesterday (manual transmission), and right now I am just waiting for the dealership to receive stock.
I've been driving a 1993 Mazda Miata (manual transmission) for the past twelve years and I have no problem driving a manual. I just have a few questions moving to the manual Fit.
What are the recommended rpm's that I should be changing gears on the Fit? With the miata I would be shifting somewhere between 3k to 4k rpm, which is roughly every 20km/hr on flat ground (1st gear 0-20, 2nd gear 20-40, 3rd gear 40-60, 4th gear 60-80, 5th gear 80+).
During my car shopping, I was not able to find a manual Fit to test drive, but I was able to test drive a manual Fiat 500. I didn't like the clutch on the Fiat very much. The pressing the clutch felt like I was going through an entire foot of travel, and while releasing the clutch pedal it didn't engage until near the top 20% of the pedal. It felt much different to my miata, which had far less travel and engaged much more quickly off the ground. Test driving the Fiat, I almost like a total newbie all over again trying to shift smoothly. Would the clutch action in the Fit be closer to the Miata or the Fiat? Either way I assume I will get used to it very quickly, but I'm just curious.

We like 3rd gear. At least I do. The wife drives faster than myself when she finally get's into 5th, but shes on he way to work. I'm the spirited driver type, retired, and 'my' Fit loves 3rd gear, all the way to 80.
