this day in age, just use your smartphone for GPS. no need to have fancy screens unless you want that aesthetically on your dash (or your car came with it). my GE goes everywhere so having a nice stereo = invitation for broken glass.
google nav is free, works very well, and maps update automatically.

I'm with Kenchan on this one. The only need I see for something other than a cell phone based navigation system is if you go where there is no cell coverage. In that case built in navigation, or ones like Garmin and TomTom are better, since you can use them with just GPS sats, they don't need cell coverage. It sure is nice using systems whose maps are updated all the time however.

Crutchfield has a pioneer GPS Headunit for $700 which looks pretty decent.
There are plenty of alternatives that are brand name which provide more GPS updates and also will have worlds better sound. i'd rather go with that.
living In Vermont, I fully see the benefit of having a GPS with maps pre-loaded. I'm traveling all over the state for work and often times there is NO signal. google gets me there even without signal but if I deviate from the path, all hope is lost as google can't recalculate.
If GPS Isn't an issue, there are $400 units out there that are decent. Pioneer has a $300 DVD Unit on Crutchfield.com
