Hypermiling - Shifting gears
#41
This is why I get up to speed then take the car out of gear and coast through the rolling hills I commute. The amount of time the car would actually be using no fuel is minimal, and I'm using much much more fuel to get back up the hills as opposed to coasting and idling when I'm out of gear. It's enough of a difference to get me 36-38mpg over a tank compared to about 33 when I leave the car in gear through those sections.

Unfortunately not. I've driven with the SGII a bunch, and have the refresh rate set to fast. I coast for a good bit. Usually from the highway 138 and highway 2 intersection to almost the 10 Frwy and 215 freeway here in so cal. I'd say it's a solid 15 miles. I get to 70mph in spots. My daily commute is 160 miles total and my last fill up showed 41mpg. That's with the updated MPG meter from honda and my little paper log I keep. The SGII is right there with it, that's why I'm wondering why its not going to straight 9999.
Silverbullet, have you had your MPG meter updated by Honda? I heard the 2009's were a few % off. I had mine done and it's within a few percent. I just ask because maybe when they updated it doesn't show straight 9999 anymore.

Set your SGII to gph meter, try again and advise back what gph's are while coasting in neutral and while coasting in gear. This will tell the tale.
I was also wondering how you got 400mpg by coasting in neutral. Now I know, coasting at up to 70mph, wow!

Yes I had mine updated but it made no difference to SGII as that pulls data straight from OBDII port not Honda mileage meter.

Agreed 100%, I actually mentioned this in another topic. This engine is very small and it needs those revs to make fuel efficient power, that's how Honda engineered it. That's why when your on the freeway you're pulling 3k+ rpms. Some larger cars actually benefit from more power from more cubic inches, because the motor doesn't have to work so hard to move the car.
