Malraux,

I understand what you are saying. I think slow and steady acceleration is the key. But you do have to get up to speed at some point.

Experimenting, I get one extra block watching the instantaneous mpg meter on a level surface, shifting at 2k, advancing through the gears. On the highway, at speed, on a level surface, instantaneous is at 40mpg.

The acceleration is the key in good gas mileage. Traffic and stop lights you can't control. But you can control how fast you accelerate!

That is extremely low. I have never gotten below 31.2 mpg in my car, combined city and highway and I regularly get on it and hit vtec.

What mileage recommended by Honda for that first oil change?

Theos,

I agree. If this continues, something is wrong.

I have been logging my gas mileage since the first time I filled the tank. 100% of the time the calculated and computer are +/- 0.5 mpg. As krunk13 suggested, if when you manually calculate the gas mileage and you find the computer to be off significantly, get it re calibrated at the dealer.

If after all of your attempts you can't break 30, just end your worries and head to the dealer knowing that you were just unlucky. I don't want you to have any hard feelings against the Fit just because you may have pulled a lemon off the lot.

Good luck!

Why don't you try romping on it a bit. Are you still at 500 miles? Id say when you get to 1000 start romping. My fit loves it and still returns good numbers.

I also agree break-in can be a factor at this point.

15% on the oil life gauge or 1 year whichever is first. Translates to around 5,000 - 8,000 mi.

Our 2011 sport automatic with about 2000 miles has been averaging about 27 mpg calculated manually. About 26 on the built-in gauge. A little less than I expected. The Mini Cooper S we traded got close to 30 mpg, but on premium fuel. We will change the oil according to the built-in oil minder gauge. Should be at around 8000 miles, I estimate.

I had similar gas mileage with my 2012 Fit Sport when I first bought it. When I picked it up the gauge was at 19 MPG with less than 25 miles on the odometer. I drove very eco-friendly and manually calculated my gas mileage after my first fill up to be around 23-24 MPG. A coworker has a 2012 base fit with a stick and told me I need to let the engine break in. He is averaging 38 MPG but has a completely different commute. I do mostly highway driving but there are a lot of big hills. I found that over time my MPG gradually increased. I now have close to 2500 miles on mine and average about 32 MPG.

As for the oil change, I was told not to change it until the oil minder gets to 15% or the oil has been in the car for a year (whichever comes first). My coworker said that he changed his at 7500 miles (when his oil minder was at 15%).

The auto trans is the main culprit. A friend has a GD with the 5AT and averages 28-30 and I drive in a similar fashion (if not more aggressively) and average 36-38 in my 5MT GD.

Don't short shift.

For one tank, drive as aggressively as you can (shift at red line).

After that, try shifting at 3k or 4k.

Yeah the auto just straight up sucks for mpgs and speed. All you get in return is ease of use.

I think it's break in. Mine was pretty low at the start too. Alarming in fact. I was used to my 09 Fit, where the AVG was off and very forgiving. Now after a couple months it's closer to 30 mpgs round town and getting better. Plus, it's warm weather now and that helps a ton. Here's the thing- if you reset the trip when filing up and do highway right away- good numbers. If you do short hops round town first, low numbers and you'll be playing catch up the whole time. Get up to crusing speed asap. The Fits avg meter will drop like a stone after a reset if you baby the car and take forever to get into fifth. All that acceleration keeps the numbers low. Get into fith and cruise with the avg hovering at 40- you'll see the avg go up better.

I disagree. My MPG has been fantastic. I drive in Atlanta rush hour 5 days a week. Plenty of stop and go from NW GA to Buckhead everyday.

35 mpg average in this cruddy traffic is pretty impressive. I haven't been on extended trip without much traffic yet. I know it has few more mpg in the tank.

I'm doing 26-29mpg and I'm not about to let a car dictate on how to drive.

Welcome Steve
I also have a 2012 Fit sport A/T and like you I'm a Mustang junkie

I had a 2011 5.0 with a Kenne Bell blower making just under 600hp and decided to upgrade to my Fit

I've noticed that the computer will read low 20"s mpg when the tank is really low and the fuel light is on or just before that occures.

As soon as I fill up it begins to read accurate and I see 28-32mpg with mixed driving.I have confirmed this is not a one time thing as it does it all the time.

I just had my first oil change at 15% and around 4500 miles on the clock.
check to see if you are getting the low mpg when you are close to E

I'm in Socal too let me know when you want to run for pink slips

I would love to have that KR

i WAVE the BS flag at this, this has been tested, the 5AT gets better mpg then the 5MT.....because of lower RPMS, the 5MT gears are short and 60-70mph it' revs a lot more.

again this depends on your shifting but the 5AT does a few mpg better then the 5MT.

This has not been my experience. By the time the tank is low the avg overall is pretty set and doesn't move much or too quickly by then. I usually drive less conservatively when the tank is low because of just that. I've been good the whole tank, setting up good numbers. Down at the 1/4 mark or so, I have some fun and the avg really doesn't budge much from where it is. Good numbers on the overall avg are set up on a fresh reset within the first 1/4 tank of usage. From 3/4 down to half, the avg settles in a bit more and slows down reflecting every little acceleration. Below half and downward, it will be tough to regain good numbers if you set them up poorly initially, and it will be eaiser to keep good numbers that WERE set up high initially. It's all about that first 1/4- 2/3 tank range upon reset, when low numbers on the avg gauge pull down overall avg quickly and badly- sometimes dropping to the low to mid 20's. Get the number high then- that's your best shot, especially if you do more city than highway. Not easy either. Upon reset, I've pulled into my driveway @ 38 mpg avg, only to see that drop to 27 pulling back out the next day within the first block away of driving. The other thing to try is frankly, not giving two shits and keeping it on the mileage readout and just enjoy...driving the Fit. A good thing too.
