Shouldn't Fuelly be correct? If not what is the point of it? Based on total miles 53582-53878=296 miles. Divided by 9.282 gallons to fill up = 31.8. Looks like Fuelly is way off and the gauge is correct! Did I calculate wrong?

It depends on when you reset the trip odometer; this determines the period over which avg mpg is calculated. Your math is right. I can't imagine fuelly would have a bug. Check the numbers you entered there.

My first entered trip odometer was at 286. I filled up/ reset and drove another 296 before my next fill up.

I sometimes work nearby home (NY city) and sometimes in upstate NY
When I am in the city I average about 28-31 mpg in the summer and 3-5 lower than that in the winter. When I and highway driving (upstate NY) I average about 33 winter and 38-39 summer.

Same tires, same driver, same load.
"city" driving is very subjective, but just for example one 20 mile journey on the same route (NY-NJ) can take anywhere from 30 min to 2 hr. My mpg for the 2 hr trip would be less than half of the 30 min trip. So a couple day of bad traffic, sitting at lights, waiting to make left turns and your average goes way down fast.

also remember how much an 'average" is thrown off by a very low value (like 0 mpg while stuck in traffic or sitting at a light)

I can get 38 if I try. Only happens on long trips, though. Speed limit on the interstate with cruise control most of the way. Then fill up when the low fuel light indicator comes on for more accurate mpg measurement.
In town I get about 30 to 32 mpg.

I live in far Southwestern Upstate New York where there are more deer than people, and lots of hills. Get pretty much the same as you in my '13 Fit Base with 5 speed manual tranny. But my winter mileage is better. Running Michilen X-Ice Xi2 all the way around in the snow and Yokohama Avid Ascend in the summer. So glad those lousy Dunlaps wore out so very fast, but did not rotate them like I should have. I also find I do better running premium (93 oct) than I do when running (87 Oct). Gives me 2 mpg better with snappier performance.

Oh, my mileage drops off on the interstate. Do much better on the two lanes running 55 /n 60 mph.

I'm doing 39 after my drive home from work tonight. 100 miles since last refueling.

You're probably correct about hot (A/C worthy) weather being a factor. Also, I haven't used headlights in a couple months, so that's a slight boost. The biggest thing seems to be a light food and less than 65 MPH.

I agree. Now that I'm used to the car (nearly 2 years and 12k miles; '13 sport MT), I average 31 mpg largely around town driving below 35 mph. Best I get is ~39 with no AC (and cool weather) and cruise set at 65.


I don't know how headlights would amount to much, but I have found the mpg indicator to be about 2% (< 1mpg) higher than my calculations.

My winter mileage would be better, except that my driving habits change. In the winter, I drive less, sometimes much less. There are weeks at a time in January/February where I might go nowhere except 6 miles to work and 6 miles home. My fuel economy is noticeably poorer commuting to and from work-not even enough time to warm the engine on those cold days.

The best I've gotten is around 40MPG on a 300+ mile trip. During the work week I get around 30MPG for my 30 mile round trip commute with some traffic. If I drive mainly in city/stop and go traffic MPG is around 25. It is a bit frustrating that the city MPG can't be any better when the engine is tiny at 1.5L.

Staying at or below 65 mph is definitely helpful,

The weekly cruises I used to take from Poughkeepsie to Queens, NY were about 25% NYC driving and 75% highway, all at 65 mph or less. I'd see anywhere from 37-40mpg with sensible (not hypermiling) driving.

Now I live in Chapel Hill, NC, and the stop-and-go 45 mph boulevard driving has been giving me 25-29mpg. Typical highway driving (70-75mph in moderate traffic) gets me about 32mpg. I'll see 36mpg on long road trips and the cruise set at 70mph.

Oh well. The extra I spend on gas is easily saved in my insurance rate differences!

Short answer: 38mpg is nice, but may not be a realistic goal. I still love my Fit though!

you can ride with me for a week and see how i easily get 39.6, give or take a couple of tenths. actual mpg, not the dash thing.
if you are running ac all the time in miami, and highway (70mph) both of those hurt mpg.

I got my best fuel economy ever last weekend. Granted it was ONLY highway driving with no slowdowns/traffic jams until getting into the city. Lots of coasting and cruise control.

Wow, that converts to 49 U.S. MPG. Not bad at all. I wasn't aware that when measured as L/100km a lower number is better.

I just drove the Alcan this week. The terrain varied greatly, but I ranged from 37 MPG to 65 MPG. (The higher number was only for about half an hour, after which it settled around 52. Love those downhill tail winds.)

I drive lightly, slow acceleration, do the speed limit and it's all flat area. Half of my usual routes is on highway but best I get these days is 29.5.

25.1 mpg with a pristine fit with 35,000 miles cold air intake full header back exhaust zero freeway driving all stop go always drive WOT rarely see 5th gear plus aero mods up front canards and lip lowered on wider tires equals shit mpg lol

I usually get around 35mpg for mixed driving. Ours roads are flat down here and I had some lightweight volks se37k. It could have been better if I would have slowed down my accelerations.
