My tdi was totaled. Buying a fit

So about a month ago my 2000 vw tdi golf was in an accident. the other driver was at fault and yesterday I get news that my car was going to be totaled. so after lots of research and trolling around on this forum, I'm going to get the fit sport 5 speed most likely in white. I had a new 98 civic when I graduated high school and only have fond memories of that car. I got insurance estimates and it's expensive for the fit. my golf had the minimum required by law which was like $30 per month and with the fit I'm looking at just over $100 per month, maybe a little less if I combine it to my wifes policy. regardless I've driven the car and love it and resale value seems to be ridiculously great so I know I wont loose a tone of $$ like my old ford focus.

It was owning a couple of old VW Rabbits that I owned in the 80s and early 90s that influenced me to own a Fit... I'm thinking of getting a second car and a second hand VW Golf may be what I end up getting.. One of my diesel VWs would get a consistent 54.7 MPG.. Even with an advertised horsepower rated at 60 the low end torque made it a fun car to drive...

If you're getting a new Fit, you can't compare the insurance costs to an older car - it's apple and oranges! Check out the last Consumer Report if you're have any second thoughts on the Fit - it rates higher than ANY car in over costs.

Hey congrats on the future purchase.. here is my feedback…

If you are set on the Fit, I wont recommend any other vehicle or ask about your driving habits..

Good choice on the 5 speed don't cave and get the AT…

My first choice was white as well, however after owning a Black one for 8,000 miles ( I caved and got the only 5 Speed in over 200 miles and I had already waited a month) I would advise you to get the silver or the grey (polished metallic?) because of the flimsy paint.. I already have several rock chips.. or get a clear bra… my $.02

By looking at the majority of cars on Fit Freak you'd assume that the most expensive thing about owning a Fit is car polish and after market parts..... The only little car I have seen that had more after market parts made for it was the air cooled Beetles....

Another thing about insurance is... amount of coverage.

The OP states that the TDI was bare minimum coverage, and so one would assume the Fit would be getting minimum coverage too. But at over $100 per month, that HAS to include comprehensive and collision coverage... as possibly GAP also if the Fit is being financed. Actually, I think C&C is required for some financing (I know mine did).

My insurance is slowly creeping up to $100 per month (@$501 per 6 months now), and it includes $250/500 C&C deductible.

So your saying silver won't chip as easily or won't show the chipping because of the color?

And yes I will be paying more for car insurance because I'll be getting a full coverage due to financing where as my Volkswagen I would just get the minimum required by law which was a lot cheaper.

We had a 2001 Jetta tdi. The Fit is a VERY different vehicle. The VW's are more solid, have a ton more torque, and are generally more refined. However, the Fit's interior has held up much better (we had peeling paint on all surfaces of the VW), the Fit is more fun to drive, the Fit is much more responsive, and most importantly the Fit has been 100% reliable. Our tdi was in the shop waaay to much for a then new car.

I think you'll love the Fit!

oh boy!! this thing is not so easy to find. One sales guy said there were only like 2 MT fit sports in all of Florida. Calling stealerships now to get additional info. I went to one this morning and he had a big smile on his face the entire time as he was explaining how great his dealership was and once I asked him if his prices were in line with truecar.com as to what I should pay, that smile turned upside down. They have numbers on the window not even close to msrp.
I'm praying I'll find something close to what I want.

They really are hard to find. If you're not in a rush, I'd call around and ask for a price to order one.

It took me from April until July to get mine, but that was in 2006. Hold out for the manual transmission for sure...+

Defiantly hold out for the manual if that's what you want. I waited 3-4 months and needing a car so I got the Auto Sport. I was still very happy with my choice but there were days I had wished I had waited for the manual
