the new HID kit will have the relay, so that will reduce the drain from within the electrical system. But I have no idea what will happen with the load detection either... but I think there was mention (either here or some site i found) that the battery acts as a load, so if its draining, then load detection should work... i think.

but no, there's no correlation between flipping on the HIDs and the radio restarting itself. it always happens AFTER the lights have already been ON (i do deliveries in the evening), which is when the usage has already dropped to 3 amps. It has happened once or twice during the day with the lights OFF. the only thing i can think of, is the recent need to use the heater (i also have the A/C on via the windshield vent setting).

i pulled out the HU and rearranged the wires somewhat to free up some room in the back, especially around the area of the HU's fan.

One other possibility is the updated maps I'm using. on the kenwoodforum site, there were a few people that had their units randomly restart on them after using that same update. My unit didn't display that in the time before my trip.
