First Post, Bad MPG
#101
Longer highway trips with mild weather 35-37 is as good as it gets. thats with 36psi tires. Any wind or rain and drop that a couple mpg. In general with prob 70/30 hwy/city I average 32-33. Not very impressive for a light 117hp car but what you gonna do. I just want it to last 10 years. I wouldn't trust a domestic with better stated mpg to do that. although there is a white and black Metro sitting down the street from my friends. I want to pick that thing up so bad. Coulda saved myself 17k dollars.

A friend at work just got a 2012 Hyundai Accent and gushes about its EPA rating of 30/40 mpg. Whenever I've ridden with him (few times) the dash display always shows 32mpg. Granted he has a heavy foot and abhors its eco-mode.
People seem disappointed with their Fits and their published EPA of 27/33mpg, when they get 32mpg. With mild effort (just being conscious of consumption, not annoying other drivers) I get 36mpg around town (70/30% hwy/cty). Try leaving the avg MPG display on and watch it. The subconscious connection with your foot will do the rest.
Here's a 1990 civic LX 1.5L. Its EPA is 27/31MPG.* It output a hefty 92HP/97lb-ft compared to today's Fit of 117HP/106lb-ft.
What's my point? Not sure. Maybe people expect too much.
It'll be interesting to see where manufacturers go over the next 10 years with the new 54.5 fleet mpg standard (vs. today's 27). I think we'll see small turbo-diesels in the north american market with a greater number of electrics and hybrids.
*The 2 seater CRX HF got 40/47 EPA rating but output an equally absurd 62HP

Since you mentioned the CRX, I figured I'd chime in about mine. I have a JDM B16A in mine which puts out 160HP, and I hit VTEC a LOT (it's really hard not to in that car!) I get 35MPG consistently no matter how hard I drive. Granted, it's a 2000lb car, but I still feel robbed when I drive a 117HP car that gets (on average) worse gas mileage than my sports car. It's the price we pay for modern day convenience and safety features I suppose.
