2011 Sport Ipod interface

2011 Sport Ipod interface
Hi all. Just traded in my 2010 base, manual for 2011 sport automatic and am very confused what I need to purchase to utilize my interface in upper glovebox. Says on line to use 5th generation or later Ipod; however, is there not something else that can be utilized other than Ipod or flash drive? Seems ridiculous to pay $70-80 on ebay for a used 5th generation when other manufacturers are much cheaper than Ipod. I need nothing other than unit for music, as video camera, pedometer, etc. are not needed/ I am not a expert in MP3 players; however, I want to utilize the interface if at all possible. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks.
John

most other players will work. if you can mount them as USB mass storage on your computer, it should work. the directory and sorting just won't be as refined as if you use an ipod.

If you are using it as a dedicated car device, then you can get a more beat up iPod. The screen can be scratched up, battery not hold much of a charge, etc.

I've gonna laugh my ass off if someone reads this post and beats the shit out of their brand new iPod before using it in the car.

I thought about that as well; however, even a beat up ipod with cosmetic problems go for $40-50 which I guess would work, as I will only be using it for car interface. Does anyone know of other devices which will work in place of Ipod ? Thanks for everyone's comments as I do not want to spend the bucks if I can get something less expensive that will work nearly as well.
Many Thanks

I think your cheapest bet is a $20 8GB flash drive from office depot. Just IMO

I agree - flash drives work just as well as an ipod--depending on how you configure your files- you can get almost as much song info on the readout. It is almost easier to have your music on a few smaller flash drives since it is easier to sort through smaller lists than a large playlist.

Thanks for information. Does anyone else have off brandedMP3 player, other than Ipod, which works on 2011 Sport IPOD interface in upper glove box? Understand about thumb drive, but was looking for less expensive player to utilize if possible.

Many thanks.

my Zune did not work, but 4th generation Ipod Nano works fine. I think others have had luck with some mp3 players, though.
