When should I buy?

Meh. The Accent still isn't the most fun to drive: 2012 Hyundai Accent Reviews, Pictures and Prices | U.S. News Best Cars
Last year US News had the Fit at #1 in Affordable Small Cars, now it is at #3. Accent is #10. I know, what does US News know...but actually I found that their rankings pretty much dovetail with those of other more esteemed rankers.
The Fit may have fewer bells and whistles, but presumably their value is more in the engineering or things you can't see.
I already figured out not to bother with the truecar "find dealers". Truecar's "best price no haggle dealers" are showing as only $1-200 off MSRP.

@138HP the Accent is 18%!! more powerful than our Fits (117HP). And the Accent is 100LBS less. Those kind of numbers people pay a lot of money to achieve. It costs less than a Fit.
Fun is relative. Here in Atlanta it's accelerating on the on ramps. Plus the Accent just oozes fun compared to the Fit's practicality.
Free lifetime power-train warranty, free lifetime oil changes. He even gets "free lifetime tire replacement." (Jim Ellis Hyundai).
Today I would seriously look at the 2012 Accent before deciding. More power to the Fit if you come back and buy one.

Yes, as you say, fun is relative.

But I don't pretend to be any kind of expert, the best I can do is get the consensus of what others say who know way more than I.
"Though it has the best power-to-weight ratio in the class, Accent doesn't feel particularly lively or exciting, an effect heightened by the feeling that you're in a vanilla compact rather than a zippy subcompact." -- Popular Mechanics

oops, math error; 18% more powerfuller.
At least drive one and tell us what you think. Or not. I did the same too (just read reviews) and only drove a Fit. Don't regret it based on what was available in 2009. Alternatives today are much better.

while you are waiting to buy
One thing to consider doing while you are waiting to buy the Fit is to start an account at www.Motozuma.com. They hold your money until you have what you want to plunk down at purchase time. They also help you advertize your purchase goal to your family and friends, so they can help you with the purchase whenever they are so moved. The money is not yours to use for anything other than the car purchase, and that is part of what is supposed to motivate your friends and relations.

More on motozuma.com
I have to add, I'm not connected in any way with the website. I *did* benefit from it, however, when I purchased my Elantra.
Hyundai has a neat and unique offer going, whereby they match your first $500 deposit. I don't know if Honda is going to ever see the need of this, but who knows?
