There were some sections going up that from the passenger side looked like a looooong way down if we went off the edge!

I drove my MT Fit up Mount Mitchell in NC (6,684') & Clingmans Dome in TN (6,643') with no problems whatsoever.. although i'm not sure, but Mt Washingtons road may be steeper. I also drove it all over the Blue Ridge parkway, Foothills parkway, Cherohala skyway & the dragon in Deals gap NC <-- 318 curves over 11miles of road fun fun!
anyways the MT fit can handle Mt Washington.

Bummer, looks like you didn't get rewarded with any views on the summit
I hiked up Washington last May and weather was perfect.. here's me on the decent along the boott spur trail looking back at the summit.

In 4 attempts I have yet to summit (hiking).. but have been on top of adjacent Jefferson quite a few times. I'm shocked those bikes could remain standing. Everytime I have gone above the tree line on Washington or the peak of Jefferson it has been at least 30mph winds and usually a lot more than that.

The car will tell you what to do. In NC & TN, I don't think i ever used 1st going up and down the mountains.. 2nd-4th gear will suffice.
just don't ride the breaks.. no one behind you wants to smell that.

I winter in VT and my area is right on the Long Trail so I get out there a bit more these days but will keep Maine in mind too. Road trip

Sure did. No problems. Use the AC to act as an engine brake while going downhill to sluff off some speed, even if you keep the windows down. Use whatever gear you need to, don't stress this, the fit handles it easily.
