First week of Fit ownership mpg report, road trip, etc.
New owner, 2010 sport manual.
OK, so around town in the first week I was happy to get about 32.5-33 mpg in my first couple tanks of gas, this is better by almsot 8 mpg than I got in city driving in my Cooper S (supercharged model) and I don't have to spend the $.30 a gallon more for premium fuel in the Fit.
We did a trip to Memphis last weekend to drop the kids off with grandparents for a couple weeks, I actually got 36.4 mpg on one tank, that was with the wife and I and our 3 kids in the back seat along with a cargo area full of there stuff and I pretty much kept it pegged at 70 mph, I do not use cruise control, ever.
On the return trip it was the wife and I, driving the same speed, but with a dresser, power washer, weed eater, and a few other things in the hatch area, half a tank of highway driving and the rest was city driving to work and back 2 days, and when I filled up last night I got 33.4 mpg.
I'm very happy with this, I was shocked that I actually got higher than the EPA highway rating on out road trip, never expected that.
When I run a spread sheet comparing the Fit to the Mini, factoring in the premium cost for 93 Octane over what I need in the Fit as well as mpg difference based on commuting driving, I will save just under $1k a year in fuel cost. Factory that with the $40 a month less payment and I'm saving $120 a month over driving the Mini.
One thing I was shocked to see was that the Fit insurance premium went up a few bucks a month, I never expected that, not that its a big deal as a married homeowner in the burbs in his late 30's has crazy cheap insurance anyway.

Absolutely, I couldn't have had me the wife and the 3 kids in the Mini, it only had 2 across seating.
We also have a Mazda5 which is like a mini-mini-van. It has dual sliding doors and a 3rd row but the center seats are split and the rear only seats 2 so its only a 6 seater and if you have the 3rd row up for seating the 3rd kid the cargo space is half the size of the Fit, seriously.
2 adults and 3 small kids can travel with mroe cargo in the Fit than can travel in the 2006+ Mazda5, thats crazy, and the Mazda gets 27mpg on the highway.

Thanks for sharing with my first week of owning the Fit Sport in Auto, I get about 280 miles-300 miles on a full tank...I wish the tank was bigger so it would last longer before fill up. Still a great car to get around in and very versatile.

Now that I have a couple weeks of driving to benchmark average mpg based on a normal week to run comparisons to the Mini I did a spreadsheet that gives a cost savings based on car payment changes and cost savings on fuel based on the difference in mpg and cost of premium to regular.
I had a note on the Mini and when I combine the monthly payment difference and the gas difference based on the 17k mile per year I currently average I am saving $119 a month compared to the Mini, thats nice!
If anyone would like a copy of the excel spreadsheet to use for future car purchase comparisons please feel free to PM me your e-mail address. It has calcs on it where you can even get your car payment based on the months, interest rate, and amount financed so it serves a few functions.
