most fuel ever filled up.
I was sweating it a little today... on purpose. light came on last night going home from a 10 mile trip.
went to the gym this morning, 3miles, then to costco, 9 miles.
I pumped 10.1 gallons in.
What's the most you guys pumped?
I kinda want to run out on purpose to really see if we pump 10.5 as the capacity stated.

According to my Fuelly:
August 23, 2010
Miles
326.2
Gallons
10.3
Price/Gallon
$2.449
Total
$25.22
MPG
31.7
I've gone past the 10 gallon mark 3 times, usually sweating and in a hypermiling daze, but I usually know my Fit's limits. As long as I don't go more than 350 mi. to a tank, I'll most likely make it.

When you push to the limits of the last gallon or so, you will get to a point where the slope of travel will affect the fuel pickup.
I've been in a car where the driver ran out of gas. Was working fine, until we parked slightly uphill. The car would not start when we got back.
So if you drive on the flat/downhill, you should be able to squeak out a couple tenths of a gallon more than if you were going uphill.
Fill up a gas can (to a measured amount) and keep it in your car. Then you can go for it without the sweat or anxiety. When it stops, get to a gas station to see how much you needed on top of the gas can's contents.

Just got my 2011 M/T Base. After a week and 600 mi, i took it on a road trip. Since i was not worried about expansion after the fill ups, i filled it up. ( no California type gas pumps on my trip) I had 2 tanks at 10.8, 3 tanks at 10.9 and my last tank, today, 11.0. This last tank was filled with a real steep slant away from the pump, so i think i cheated a bit there.
LOVE the Fit!

Hi Coppatop85,
My handbook says 10.6 too. The click off is at about 9 gallons, then i retract the nozzle completely from the filler neck. Without a flapper valve on the restrictor, i can pump a coherent stream of fuel through the opening until the tank is full. I only feel comfortable doing this on a trip when i know that the engine will be running immediatly for the next 2 or 300 miles.

No. The filler neck is a long pipe going to the tank since the tank is under the front seats. (imagine how far that pipe is from the filler door down and under the back driver's door over to thefront seat). there's plenty of room for additional fuel if you fill up the neck however not advised for safety reasons.

unless you drive for an hour or so to burn off that extra half gallon, passed capacity...

Funny for the past 22 years I have always filled up to the filler, till I see fuel. None of my cars have gone ka-boom and I've gone as little as .2km after filling, turning off the car and coming back 9 hours later and driving home from work just 8.5km and going back to work in the morning the 8.5km, rinse repeat rinse repeat.

I didn't have kaboom but I had paint removed from my car because of gas running down the side. "attendant" at a gas station in NJ, topped off the tank on a hot & sunny day right before I went home. This was my black/black prelude in 98F weather with only a .5mile drive home from the station. Gas expanded and ran out and down the side for the entire day. next day I came out, the paint was gone right below the filler. Cost the gas station's insurance company $600.

Not proud of this, but for the sake of science I'll admit it. I ran out of gas last week, got a sip of gas from passing truck and filled up at gas station about 1.5 miles away. The pump registered a 10.803/gal ($3.599/gal=$38.45 total, 32.9MPG), and an 11 on the embarrassment scale. I must have filled to the top of the cap to give me those extra couple miles I apparently need...thought I'd learned this lesson when I was 19...
