Not look for mpg, looking for approx how many miles can you squeeze out of a tank of gas before you refill?
I'm used to 1/4 marks on gas gauges lol......
My commute is 100 miles per day r/t 99 % highway...looking at the Fit now that gas is really starting to climb in price. MY current ride (2007 Chevy HHR) is not horrible in the mpg dept 31-33 mpg if I baby it but filling the 16 gallon tank is getting close to 50 bucks a fill
Just trying to gauge how many days in between that I'll need to fill up
Thanks!

What's wrong with the MPG concept? I mean you're now asking for gallons when you know the mileage??? I'm not understanding.
My last Cadillac had a digital dash display. One thing I liked was the fuel gauge showed you how many gallons of fuel were let in the tank. It really made life easy.

OK, the low fuel light comes on around 9.8 gallons or so, although the Fit has a 10.8 gallon tank. So if we assume you fill up when the light comes on, and you get the EPA highway mileage of 33 mpg, you can go 323 miles until the low fuel light comes on.

Just my weird math skills at work trying to put it all together. I'm just trying to figure out how many days in between fill ups.
I guess I asked the 2nd part because if Natureboy gets roughly 300 miles to the tank...is he refilling 7 gallons, 8 gallons 10 gallons etc? I get to a certain point in my tank on the HHR and I refill and I know I'm more than likely gonna put in 13 or 14 gallons...maybe my commute is so predictable I know pretty much how many gallons are gonna go in on next fill up.
Or maybe I'm just being lazy and looking for shortcuts in doing the math ....I would love to be able to stretch it out to almost 350 miles to a tank and have to fill up every 4th day

I didn't even realize there was a low fuel light..thanks!

I normally refuel at ~225ish miles. On the flip side, I put 7-8 gallons in when I refuel. I don't like waiting for the low fuel light to come on.
All that said, if you are mainly a highway driver, my numbers are totally no right for you. I'm 90+% city driving, so my milage suffers accordingly. On the highway, you should be able to do 300 miles between refills.

Honestly, MPG's are MPG's and the Fit has a smaller tank than your HHR, but the MPG's are similar. I would think you would get better gas mileage with The Fit, but not a huge difference in MPG's.
So if that is your only factor? I don't know if I would say The Fit is a big upgrade in that area.
I'd recommend The Fit because I think it's a better vehicle all around. I looked at Chevy HHR's before I purchased my Fit, and I'd say they are in many way opposite vehicles. Where The Fit from the outside appears "small" but feels roomy and has suprising cargo configurability, The HHR is just the opposite, because of it's styling, it looks bigger from the outside, but IMO is suprisingly small on the inside.
But if I was otherwise happy with my HHR? I wouldn't purchase the an automatic Sport Fit with the idea that suddenly I was going to get a huge increase in MPG. It would be an improvement..but IMO not large enough...
Consider a hybrid. The Insight? Civic Hybrid...or...lightening strike...The Prius? There is where you would get some real gains in MPG and fuel cost savings.

With my commute and driving habits, usually I get between 250-275 miles per tank. For me, that means I usually fill up every three to four days on average...about eight gallons worth of fuel. I generally refuel right around 1/4 tank. I'm like malraux up above, I don't feel comfortable waiting for the low fuel light to come on before I put gas in.

I drive about 90 hwy miles a day... to save fuel, I keep it at about 60-65 and stay in truck-slip-streams whenever it's convenient. This gets me in the 38-42mpg range... which translates to a 9 to 9.5 gallons fill-up every 350mi or so.

Thanks for the info so far guys....actually the Fit would be an upgrade a bit in the mpg area.....smaller tank for only a little less miles per tank = a pretty decent cost savings at the pump. I bet with my commute I'd be able to stretch out close to 40mpg...I know with my wifes car in the summer she has pulled out some 42 mpg runs
What I would be giving up is some comfort with the HHR, Leather, heated seats and quieter ride and some power....just about to turn 100k on it and it has been a great car. Nothing major has gone wrong with it.....both hub bearings went out but were covered under the 100K warranty......other things may start now...
350 miles per tank would be ideal whiskeysix! Thanks for the input.

I'm pretty conservative regarding fill-ups, and have always filled up at 1/4 tank give or take. To do this your 100mi r/t commute (50 mi 1 way) would mean filling up every 3rd day at 250 mi, once at origin and once at destination. That would give you options in event of traffic tie-ups, gas shortages, side trips etc.

My commute is 45 miles one way, and gas is about $.15 cheaper at home then where I work. So if the tank is anywhere near where I think the 1/4 mark should be, I fill up at home before going to work. Basically, I figure I am going to have to drive nearly 100 miles before I can get gas again if I head to work, so I make sure my car can get there. Only once have I driven the car until the gas light came on.
That said, I calculate my MPG and write down the details with every fill up (using Gas Cubby on my iPhone). I have been doing this since I bought the car in November.
My ave MPG is 33, so I should get ~300 to a tank with a gallon left in reserve on average. My low is 27 and my high is 35 (and both are outliers). I put a roof rack on my car (with a wind screen) and the past 4 fill ups have been 29 - 30mpg (calculated). I like the look of the car with the rack, but I may take it back off if evidence shows that I am getting 3mpg less with it.
