Window Tinting....please explain the basics to a noobie
Picked up my new to me Fit sport Wed, 09 with only 16k miles and one of the first things I want to do is window tint some of the windows. I've never been down this road before and don't know a whole lot about the ins and outs. My main reason for tinting will be that i will be transporting my two dogs at times in the rear and I have bikes...expensive bikes that I will put in the back...and don't want anyone to know they are there.
BTW, I live in PA, unsure of the state laws....and I do want to be able to see at night.

I've asked the Pros done mine. They know the % tint's upper legal limit in my area before the cops give me a ticket. They use "layman" term to asked me I like my tint to be light, medium or dark.
I selected medium because dark will not enable me to see at night and the cops will give me a ticket for my area for dark tint. I can only tint my back wind shield and back passenger windows and cannot tint my front passenger windows or front windshield, otherwise, the cops will give me a ticket.
They provide bubble free warranty... so far no problems. The last thing I want is for my tint windows grow bubbles as the weather temp changes and it will look like my FIT is suffering from baby skin rash disease.

My tint is 20% and it is pretty dark and you can hardly see inside unless the sun is shining directly at the windows and someone is literally peering inside. My concern is with kingfisher's dogs. They may scratch at the tint and that will leave some unsightly "blemishes" and over time the tint may start peeling.

yeah i would be worried like said above if your dogs started to scratch the tint, because it is only a film and they might rip right through it. I recently also got my windows done at 20% because it is dark but still not the darkest. It looks good in my opinion and i can see fine at night still as well as during the day you cant see through unless there is direct light on it.

Five rear windows [35%] and a 7" windscreen [5%] tint cost me $200 at a local shop. Look around before springing. Not all shops are the same. I found a good one by talking with the guys at a high-end car stereo place.
((2)(dog))(nice car/tinted windows) = you do the math.....

basically, 5% tint is limo tint. you can clearly see out, but they can barely see in.
being that the fit has SO much glass, and assuming your law allows for 35% tint, you might have to break that law in order to get the tint that you desire.

Though my FIT is reasonably tinted, I installed cargo cover as well to hide valuables in the trunk cargo area. I try not to tempt thieves with stuff lying around on the back seat.
I've heard about well prepared thieves bringing along strong torch lights to shine into tinted cars, hoping to see something.

Tinting is PA is illegal. No tint is allowed. After they tint your car in PA you will get a disclaimer from the seller saying that it is not street legal and only for showroom purposes.
So if you want it to appear legal you can just do anywhere from 15% to 20% on all of the rear windows. Consider that most cars/SUVs with a hatch that you see come with factory tinted windows in the back. A cop wouldn't think twice to see your car with windows that are tinted in the back.

When you go to a tint shop, they should able show you different "shades" of tint in % wise. The higher the number % the lighter the tint. What that number is, is the "amount of light" that "passes through". So for example here in CA a lot of shops put 50%-70% tint in the front and then anywhere from 35% to 5%(limo tint) in the rears.
If tint in PA is illegal then you can get the lightest tint possible to be less noticeable to the LEO and/or get "performance" film which is relatively new. It has very light tint, like 70%, but rejects almost 90% of UV rays and heat. In addition I would get black cargo blankets to cover your bike. I have a $3000 mountain bike that I use my FIT to travel my bike with to the trails. If I have to go somewhere before going home I cover my bike with the black cargo blanket which makes the bike "disappear" to passerby's because the FIT interior is black, camouflaging the bike.
