I'm about to experience the winter FIT mpg blues for the first time. Seems like December brings them on, and $3+ a gallon for fuel tells me the 'oil sharks' have begun to circle again. Not too bad in my FIT, but 250gal a shot of fuel oil surely hurts.

I'm guessing my 38mpg average is going to drop to 35. Today I check tire pressures again. I'm beginning to believe if they fall below my 35psi standard the mpg's drop as well, and w/ 20d weather now it's time to check.

Shockwave - we are screwed, and it isn't getting any better We've got a new/old governor - just wait....

Don't forget about all the rolling resistance brought on by dragging snow in the wheel wells. Not sure what you're getting in Albany, but we are getting killed in Syracuse. I'm still on my first tank that came with the car. The trip computer is showing about 29 or 28.5 MPG after 180 miles. The fuel gauge is now below the halfway mark and heading towards 3/8. I have to say that the car handles very well in the snow, despite no VSA or AWD. I actually prefer the lack of VSA. It seems to get in the way in my wife's CRV.

Spent three cloudy/cold years in Syracuse once... Learned how to say 'lake effect' back then, seems worse these days, like a line in the sand. We have finally got a dinosaur BBQ this year, however, and that helps keep the ice away.

Another EPA rating needed Highway/City/Winter.

I mean I guess i do hit it and get it some i just got the fit around a month ago and before that i was used to the big 2.5 4 cyl of my spec-v sentra. It gets alot better gas mileage then sentra just not as great as i thought i would.

56 is my best. That's speed limit driving @ 70 mph then down to 55-60 as I got into the DFW area on a 3+ hr trip across I-20.

the only way i could see that happening is if you had a strong tail wind, car was light, tires super stiff, manual tranny... don't know if this car is capable of 56 mpg though...

You're getting EPA estimate- nothing particularly wrong with that number. It's mostly damn cold where you are right? Seriously, that makes it tough to get better than average numbers. You'll see in the warmer weather that number will go up considerably. Tame your foot a little too. You gotta at least make an effort a bit. Otherwise just drive and enjoy. 28.6 ain't bad at all in the cold months of winter.

I snapped a pic of the gauge. Not that that's particulary convincing proof since someone could do it after a reset and going downhill. But I'll dig it out. Going west out of east Texas to dfw, the terrain gets really flat. That's my only guess. Because taking the same route in reverse 2 days later, mpg dropped to 44. That was in the good ol days when I tried to drive gently. Now I'm lucky to see 35-36.

I just took a road trip to Dallas, Texas from Phoenix, Arizona. Driving from Phoenix to Dallas I had my Fit on cruise control at 70mph the whole way and my average mpg when I arrived to Dallas was 34.5mpg. On my way to Phoenix from Dallas I had my Fit on cruise control at 65mph the whole way and my average fuel consumption was 38.2mpg. I also noticed the car handles much better at 65mph than at 70mph so from now on I am not going over 65 unless I really have to.

That's a significant difference in MPG at 65 MPH. Seems worth it to me. I will never understand these folks who speed along.

The problem for me is the Fit LOVES zipping along and I don't feel the speed. Even having driven mine for over a year now, many times I look down and I'm doing 80 mph on the expressway without even realizing it. That's not good for mpg's or the risk of a speeding ticket. In these parts, it's very hard to keep cruise on for any length of time because of so many morons who can't drive properly. Even at 4am, there are still idiots out there. Cruise or not, I average between 65 and 70 mph. I could get fantsatic mpg's at 55- 60 mph, but it would be a battle of cars zipping around me and making my life miserable- not to mention theirs. 65-70 is the unspoken allowance by highway patrol. And people do it by default. Besides, I just can't go as slow as 55mph- the posted limit. It is much too slow. I'd have to leave a whole bunch earlier just to get where I'm going. So my mpg's at 65 mph or so will have to do, and they're fantastic!
