Winter Tire Size

Winter Tire Size
Hi everyone Excuse the (probably dumb) question, but I'm a girl that knows nothing about tires...
I have a 2010 Fit Sport with the tires that come on it (when I googled it told me the size is: 185 / 55 R16 83H )
I need to put some winter tires on it, and I have a set (already on rims) that have only been through 2 very light winters. I really don't want to have to buy new ones. The size of those is: 185 / 65 R14 85S
Any word on if these will work? I really, really don't want to have to spend more money on a new set.....

Just search winter and you will get many good threads about this. Also the rim size and offset is important what's the size and offset?

I think to get 14" rims to work on the Sport, You'll need spacers. Search here for anyone running 14" rims on a 2009 or 2010 as officially the smallest wheel you can run is a 15". I believe though that with spacers (moves the wheels outwards), the calipers will clear the wheels. The other issue you may run into is overall diameter. Those wheels will be smaller in diameter than the stock wheels but just by a little bit. Unfortunately, the Fit is already low enough and lowering it a bit more in the winter might not be desirable.
I'll be running 15" wheels this winter with 185/65 profile and they'll lift the car about 1/4 of an inch higher off the ground. running 185/65 on a 14" will put you about 1/4" lower than stock.
Worst case scenario, you can offload those wheels to anyone with a 2005 or earlier civic on Craigslist for probably a decent rate.

Thanks very much for your help
That's what I was afraid of. I reallllllly didn't want to have to try to sell them and pony up money for new ones. Meh.
I thought maybe the fact that the original tires are 55 and my winter ones are 65 might balance out the difference in rim size but, again, I know NOTHING about this stuff. lol.

If the 14" wheels have the proper holes and offset those tires are abouta half-inch less diameter but will work ok. Thats assuming they are decent tires, naturally. They will throw your speedometer and odometer reading out only a couple of per cent so figure you're going 58.5 mph when your speedometer says 60. Not worth worrying about.
Lets hope you had the wheels on your Fit before but if not:
IF your winter set hasn't been mounted on your Fit or another 4 bolt Honda they should have the 4 holes on a 100 mm bolt circle (3and 15/16"), measured from the near edge of a hole across to the outer edge of a hole opposite. DO NOT ASSUME THAT 4" is close enough to 3 and 15/16"; the holes must line up perfectly. And of course a trial mounting is better; if the stud bolts do not line up perfectly on all 4 holes DO NOT MOUNT THE WHEELS.
The offset should be 45 to 52 mm and that number can be found on one of the spokes backside.. If that number is less than 45 you probably can't use them. good luck.

I tried mounting my 14 in snow tires on my 2010 fit that I had from my civic. they fit fine, I drove around the parking lot doing figure 8's and turning with the wheels at full lock. never once did they rub or hit the calibers. I am not using them because they were too small of a diameter.
charmedimsure: I also went to a website with a tire calculator for the overall diameter. Tire size calculator is the web site.
I found that the tires you want to put on are 1.7 inch smaller overall so they would lower your car alittle less than an inch (about .85 inch if you want) I don't see an issue using these as long as you know the speedo will be off, you will adding miles faster than usual, (not good if you are underwarn) and the bolt pattern is the correct size (4x100mm).

Reducing the ground clearance by nearly an nch also is a problem.

Lukasz, you are either inputting the wrong numbers or reading the numbers incorrectly. 185/65R14 tires have a diameter of 23.5", whereas the stock 16's are 24" - i.e. just a quarter of an inch lowering. Seriously, nothing to really worry about. They'll work fine.
I run Del Sol 14" alloys on my 2009 Fit Sport, and the wheels have more than enough caliper clearance without any spacers. I do run 185/70R14's, as I purchased them specifically for this car, but I wouldn't hesitate to run the 185/65's if that's what I had on hand.

Thanks for all the help!
Meh. I guess it might be best to bite the bullet and get new tires. I don't want to mess with my odometer because I've got a warranty.
I'm going to buy a second Fit in a week or two since I'm starting a new job and won't be able to share a car with my husband anymore. I am going to see if I can get them to throw in winter tires this time around...

I was actually reading the wrong info, I was reading circumference not diameter. My bad

Yep - then 1/2 diameter = radius, which is what the actual difference in ride height is going to be

i was at the honda dealer, the winter tire size they are putting on the fit LX and fit sport in canada is
175 65 15 Michelin x-ice 2, on 15 inch honda wheels.

I hope you didn't pay that for them.... They have the same tires at Canadian Tire with a $70 in-store rebate. 4 of the tires plus steel rims will cost me $633.92 plus tax. I'm going to go in and order them for both my Fits tomorrow.

They are $125.99 each and the steel rims are $49.99 each. But I saw in the flyer that there is also a $70 in-store rebate when you buy Michelin winter tires. So it works out to $633 before tax.

...Found out this morning when I went in that it would cost more, but still cheaper than going through Honda.
The Canadian Tire guy tells me that he's not sure the $49.99 steel rims that the website told me will fit my Fit will actually fit. Of course. He says that we may have to go with ones that are $59.99. Also, we have to pay to balance the tires, only installation is free. Of course. :P
He couldn't tell me if the cheaper rims will fit. He has to wait until Friday or Saturday when the tires come in and he has my car up in the air. If the cheaper ones fit, they'll just adjust the price.
For 4 tires and 4 rims, plus the balancing and tax included it comes to $869. That includes the rebate. And if the cheaper rims fit, I can knock another $40 plus tax off that price.
I ended up telling them to go ahead and order them for me (apparently the size that Fit Sport needs is a "special order"). The kicker for me was that if you have a Cdn Tire Options Master Card you can defer the payment for 12 months with no fees or interest.
If any one wants to take advantage of the $70 instant rebate, make sure you order them before Friday though... the offer is through Michelin, so Cdn Tire can't extend it. And it expires Nov. 25th.
