My poor Fit got jammed up the rear... =(

Hey all,

Last thursday, I got into a nasty rear end accident. I was stopping for a yellow light during the morning rush hour and I guess the guy behind me assumed I was going to run it... so he sped up and tried to gun it too. I guess he didn't notice I braked until it was too late... ended up hitting me pretty hard.
He was driving a white Chevy Blazer... pretty big car. Surprisingly, I'm not feeling too horrible after the accident... slightly sore neck and back but nothing major. Kudos to the Fit for being a safe car.

The estimate for the damage was $2700... although after the body shop took apart the rear, the cost has since gone up to ~$5000 to repair my beloved Fit I'm getting a new bumper, a new hatch, and the metal bar behind the bottom of the hatch has to be replaced. I think the shop also said there was some minor frame damage...

Anyway, here are some pics:

I think you'd have a lot of screwed up drivers looking at strobes all the time. Can you imagine what rush hour would look like? A damn Christmas tree! Strobes, no. Better drivers, yes. You learn quick- don't crowd the car in front of you when charging a yellow. They may, or very often not, actually go for it.

I'm pretty sure a rear-end accident won't set off any air bags.

5 Grand is BULL. Mechanic overcharging... this is why insurance rates are so high.

that doesn't look that bad.

This happened to me 4yrs ago, I was doing 40mph, drunk guy was doing 80ish he 'tried' to weave between me and another guy and struck me. $9500 in repairs, 2-1/2months in the shop. crazy diminished value.

@ Shockwave199: No... thankfully, they didn't. I was almost at a complete stop when he hit me... It felt pretty hard though. I think he really did speed up to try to beat the light. I guess he wasn't looking ahead and was looking at the light instead...

@ LeafEater: Damn that looks rough... I'm glad you're alright. Looks pretty darn serious.

I *SHOULD* be getting the car back on Monday... I'll for sure take more pics of the repair when it's done.

Wow that looks a lot like what happened to my 2002 Civic too. I tried like hell to get them to declare it totaled but they insisted on fixing it. All I could do is eat into their greedy profits by making them do warranty work on it but it was such a pain in the butt.

I am so sorry that this happened to the op on such a new vehicle. Make sure you ask for depreciation and not just get it repaired because you can never again say the car hasn't had body work. Plus even when it's fixed it will still have tells that it has had body work. Frame work is no joke.
