Yippee my Kuat Alpha came in!
I was originally going to mount a Softride Versa (it's for sale if anyone is interested). But I was worried about the weight on a class 1 hitch even though it was about 10 lbs lighter than the Yakima Holdup. So instead I changed up to a Kuat Alpha just to be on the safe side. 13 lbs vs 43lbs is not bad.
Here are some pictures of it (pardon the dirty car. It just finished raining).
With two bikes on the back (a MTB and a Roadbike), the rear comes down a just a teeny tiny bit. It's barely noticeable.
I found that the cradles on this rack aren't as good as Yakima in keeping the bikes from swaying. This seemed to be the best way on this rack to keep the bikes from swaying back and forth. The Yakima Double Down I had on the SUV cradled the bike better IHMO.
Another thing I'm not really fond of with the Kuats are the removable pins if you have to remove if you need to get into your hatch or if you are folding it up. While this may be less prone to failure, I like the convenience of the spring loaded pins that you would find in the Yakimas, Thules, Softride, etc.
Aside from those little quirks, I'm glad I changed up to this. I would mount the Versa just to see, but I don't have the adapter to change it from a 2" to a 1.25"
