Just drove into the city and back to pick up my mom and got 18 mpg. Was driving 98% city. My mom was in the car for more than half the ride so I was driving somewhat conservative and I even used some hypermiling techniques such as neutral when coasting.

I lived in Chicago years ago, and never got that bad mileage even with a v8. Is that actual mileage or what the display says. Automatics should get better mileage in the city.

thats what the display says. actual is not that far off for me. I did a little experiment today and did drive for 22 miles while getting 22 mpg and I filled up right away. came out to about .978 gallons. Off by 2%. Not bad.

I dont understand why the mileage is so low you should be getting 25-30 in city driving. The i-vtec is very efficient better then the vtec. The ivtec has variable cam timing so it always runs efficient. The car should use .16-.19 gallons per hour at idle according to scangauge. Add 10-15 percent with ac on.

True, but if you're not moving that's 0MPG - move ahead very little and it doesn't get that much better. A whole lot of NYC driving is needing to "keep the motor running" and not getting anywhere slowly.

An historic side note

The year was 1977. The "Ecology Movement" was brand new. The "Establishment" was still blaming it all on the hippies.

We had been separating the plastic and glass and metal out of our household trash for 5 years already, only to see it all thrown into the same garbage truck.

James Taylor came up with this little ditty:

Traffic Jam

Damn this traffic jam, how I hate to be late, it hurts my motor to go so slow.
Damn this traffic jam, time I get home my supper'll be cold, damn this traffic jam.

Well I left my job about 5 o'clock, it took fifteen minutes go three blocks,
Just in time to stand in line with a freeway looking like a parking lot.
Damn this traffic jam, how I hate to be late, it hurts my motor to go so slow.
Damn this traffic jam, time I get home my supper'll be cold, damn this traffic jam.

Now I almost had a heart attack, looking in my rear view mirror,
I saw myself the next car back, looking in the rear view mirror,
about to have a heart attack, I said,
damn this traffic jam, how I hate to be late, it hurts my motor to go so slow.
Damn this traffic jam, time I get home my supper'll be cold, damn this traffic jam.

Now when I die I don't want no coffin, I thought about it all too often.
Just strap me in behind the wheel and bury me with my automobile.
Damn this traffic jam, how I hate to be late, it hurts my motor to go so slow.
Damn this traffic jam, time I get home my supper'll be cold, damn this traffic jam. Damn.

Now I used to think that I was cool running around on fossil fuel,
Until I saw what I was doing was driving down the road to ruin.

Boys and girls, that was 33years ago! Big oil is still winning! Can anyone explain to me the controversy?

You are right, It would be interesting to see what the hybrids get in the same situation.

To get the advertised mpg I... drive normally

Compete lack of road rage and inflating to 38 psi probably helps too
