Fit Mileage during break in...

Fit Mileage during break in...
I've only had my Fit Sport for a week, delivered with 140 miles, now at 300. In the city (Boston) I seem to be hovering around 18 mpg.
I know that with such a limited driving sample I shouldn't take these figures too seriously. I'm only on my second tank. In fact, I think what I'm looking for here is for someone to tell me to chill, let the Fit settle in and read the numbers after a few more tanks.
But, I do want to keep an eye out if this is potentially an issue. First gear feels a little 'gummy' to me, but the car and I are getting used to each other.
Your thoughts on this matter would be appreciated.

dont fret. you also have to vary your revs to break in properly so yea youre going to be on and off the gas like crazy. this is what should kill any benefits of fuel efficiency. also you shouldnt cruise on highway speed at just a set speed you should vary it also.
140 is quite a alot for a new car imo. my fit was delivered to me after an old white couple test drove it. it had 12 miles on it when i hopped in to take it home.
mpg does increase over the break in time and once broken in youll see true mpg of the fit. depending on how your driving habits are youll see anywhere from 28-45mpg.
on my first tank of "almost full complimentary tank" i dumped the tank till the light came on and my total miles for that tank was like 256.

I've had good luck. Picked up the car with 12 miles also. First tank was just shy of 38 mpg, second tank, just shy of 36 mpg. About 100 miles into the third, and around 36.5 or so.
I take it pretty easy, but will do a full acceleration here and there for fun, but pretty easy in general.
Hopefully yours will get better.

I received my Fit with 190 miles on it! Nice- a used car at that point.
I think 18 mpgs is low for the Fit, even considering break in, imo. You must be doing serious city driving. I wouldn't panic, but keep an eye on it at least. You should be getting in the mid to high 20's even now, I would think, and even expect.

The car had to be driven to Boston because I wanted a specific color and I didn't really have the luxury of waiting for the next truck to arrive. The dealer was up front about what I was looking at for miles. I could have had one in silver with 8 miles, but I wanted tidewater blue to match the signature color for my website and business.
I should point out that my one outing on the highway yielded about 37 mpg for the trip. The 18 mpg is purely a city total and, as I said, both are based on pretty limited samples.

Ok, highway is right on. That's good. I wouldn't worry- especially if you're driving true city and not suburban. It's hard to do much with true city driving. It's funny, I took delivery with miles on it because I wanted Silver. I could have hopped in a TWB right off the lot. Couldn't get to liking that color. The exact opposite of your situation! Enjoy the Fit!

Cold weather? Snow? If you're doing city driving with lots of idling and short trips, doing that with cold snowy weather to a new engine could feasibly lead to 18 mpg I suppose. How long has it been since you started that second tank (assuming you reset the mpg gauge when you got gas)?
Snow seems to have more of an affect on my mileage than I would have thought before--around here, driving slow through crappy roads with lots of crud on them seems to cause a lot of drag on the wheels, and it makes it impossible to do any sort of coasting, so I'm a lot deeper into the gas than I otherwise would be.

Cold weather, yes, and a bit of snow, but not on the second tank. I'm only 40 miles into the second tank, and it's all lights and traffic, even if I'm going easy on acceleration.
I'm obviously jumping the gun here, so I appreciate no one taking me to task.

I've been to Boston once, about a year ago. I don't envy your driving conditions. That was one confusing city for a rookie Boston visitor like myself. Luckily, I didn't have to drive at all while I was there.

Well I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one who took delivery of a Fit with alot of miles on it. I cranked mine for the first time with 192 miles on the odo. They drove mine from somewhere in Mississippi. I'll look at the window sticker next time I find it and post exactly where.

Chill, let the Fit settle in and read the numbers after a few more tanks.

Tell you what though, cold temps have proven to make a significant difference in mpgs. This fillup, the temps have been in the 40's and my mpgs have gone up nicely again. Temps in the 20's or lower, and my Fit got much lower mpgs. I know that has been said before, but now I see it big time for myself.
Also, make sure to check tire pressures too.

Severe cold, snow, even heavy rain have all had a noticeable (negative) effect on fuel economy on my Fit. I suspect winter gas formulations in the Northeast, also costs me 1-2 MPG. Over the winter, I've been averaging about 34-35 MPG compared to about 38-40 MPG last summer ('09 Sport MT).
I'm waiting to see if the economy comes back up in the spring.

If it makes you feel any better, I do most of my driving in Allston/Brighton, Cambridge, and Somerville, and my first tank was around 23. Each tank after that has gone up, so now I'm on my 4th and averaging around 28.
It'll get better, you just have to get some miles on the car, that's all.
