When to change oil

When to change oil
I bought my FIT sport this past August (2009). I just have 5000 miles on it. A letter from my dealer says the oil should be changed at 5000 miles, but when I called the service department they said wait until the dash indicator says oil is at 15% (it is now at 60%), or after one year.
Any wisdom or advice out there?

How many times are we going to discuss this. Just change the oil when it gets dirty. I dont follow the maintenance mainder, according to it I should change my oil every 15,000 miles... yeah right. I change mine every 7500 miles with Pennzoil platinum synthetic.

When it gets dirty? You have an oil analysis done monthly?

as others have noted, this topic has been covered 1000 times.... with 500 different opinions.
i did a survey of dealer service depts. and the vast majority said trust the monitor.
i lose about 10% on the oil monitor for about every 1000 miles driven.
i waited until about 25% oil life before my last oil change.

why do most people get upset when someone new to the board wants to discuss a topic that's already been posted previously. how are they supposed to know it's been discussed before? if you're so upset by it, don't respond to the thread. i'm sure there are people on here that don't mind helping out, so leave it to them to answer the question. stop acting so high and mighty because you got your FIT way before someone else.

Holy cow! Are you racing that car? My oil minder hit 20% at 10,000 miles.

These variations in the mileage minder make me think that it may be serving it's intended purpose... providing guidance under a variety of driving conditions!

I just changed mine on Friday. I bought the 2009 Sport AT on ~4/15, had 8,200 miles and 30% left on the oil life indicator (which means 20% to 30%).
FWIW, my salesman said to change the oil at 10%, or 1 year and that is after the sale, when I called him to see if I should come in sooner.

Specifically:
If no one else has said it here, Honda recommends NOT to change the oil until the Maintenance Minder wrench illuminates at 15% oil life remaining. If oil changes are done too early fuel economy, oil consumption and engine performance may be compromised. As a senior service advisor at a dealer, we have seen nearly all newer vehicles that have either oil consumption issues or lower than average fuel economy numbers to have had an oil change done at 3000 miles or less. The Honda engineering teams we talk to on the phone say that until a small amount of breakdown occurs in the oil the break-in does not occur correctly, if rings don't seat within a certain amount of time from new it is likely they will not ever seat correctly.

As mentioned in an earlier thread. Oil analysis shows that Honda, like other manufacturers, use high moly break-in oil from the factory. My Z was the same way. I would trust what the engineers at Honda recommends us to do. This is one situation that if it really didn't matter when the first oil change was Honda would not specify since coming in early only makes them money from service.

yeah, i got an email at 3 months saying i should bring my car in for oil change. i emailed back about the whole break-in, 10k miles, 10-20% oil life stuff...and they replied back " you should bring you car in every 3 months or every 3k miles ". I even got a reminder call last month. I'm waiting 'til at least 8K.

It has nothing to do with when someone got their fit, or any subsequent high and mighty actions.
