Anyone fix the glovebox rattle, or is it just me.

I've tried taking everything out of the car that wasn't bolted down and still have this rattle that I think originates in the glove compartment at speeds over 50 MPH. It gets louder if I'm hard on the gas, and quieter if I'm coasting. I don't get it, and I don't know if the dealer would even attempt to fix it. Anyone else have this problem and/or fixed it?

Well, if it's the same rattle as I had (a light, rapid tapping especially at highway speeds on concrete and very annoying for both driver and passenger) then it's in the lower glovebox latch and the fix is to have the dealer replace the glovebox under warranty. It took me two tries to get this done. The first time they just fiddled with the glovebox and left it slightly misaligned and the rattle was, if anything, worse afterwords. I gave them a very poor review when Honda called, and the next time they replaced the glovebox without question. It took them several weeks to get the part, however, and it took them about 3 hours to swap it out (with an oil change as well).

So walking into my dealer and asking them to fix this under warranty isn't going to cost me then. I'd prefer they didn't change the oil (I like doing it myself) but fixing it for free would be awesome!

As far as I know the oil change didn't have anything to do with it. We decided over the phone after the first, unfortunate, visit that they would swap out the glovebox. I didn't want to make two trips, one for the glovebox and then one again for my next oil change, and so when my oil meter was next down to 25% I called them to give a heads up so that they could order the part, and then when the part arrived we booked an appointment for both. It did mean that I had to drive this summer with my glovebox open, which was a pain. But it was less of a pain than having to make two trips to the dealership.

Yours doesn't make noise with the glovebox open? Mine does it all the time. Must be on the gas hard all the time.

Mine's quiet when open, maybe because all I leave in there are a few maps. I don't want to keep anything else in there because I leave it open when I park to show folks looking for the key to my wheel locks that that's not where it is. NYC thing, I guess.

Ours had a rattle when we first bought it. It was quiet when we drove with the door open. When we had our first oil change (free) they took care of the problem. I was told there was one bolt loose. I didn't ask which bolt it was but the rattle is gone.

Its funny to hear you guys complain about a 'glovebox rattle'. This is such a minor concern it makes me smile to know we have enought time to complain about it since so little else is wrong with the car.

Back on the Thunderbird and Cougar Club of America forums we complained about a rattle too. It was called the 'Ford Death Rattle' (sometimes the 'death wobble')

We even had a mod called the J-mod or Jerry's Mod. One would take out the valve body and drill holes in the seperator plate to improve shifting perfomance. Thats how great our transmissions were from the factory

So come on, really... Just to put things in perspective

Yeah, if a few rattles are all we have to complain about, we are in pretty good shape! Compare that to my now ex PT Cruiser.. $1,000 power modules, complete brake failures, endless computer and electical gliches. Not to mention my Solstice. An 08 with 18 warranty visits in 18 months. I'd settle for a few rattles. My Fit panel rattled for a day, then just stopped. Checked everything, but it just went away.

Mine has had the rattle since I purchased it. Solution turn up radio plus I figure if I fix It something else will break like on last car. I have tired of it so I'm going to dealer soon for it. I have to remember this a Honda not a chevy where you go in for warranty work over and over. Only problem since purchase in Oct 09.

Problem diagnosed and solved.

The reason why the rattle goes away when the glove box is open is because the stopper (green area) applies pressure and closes the gap in the red area. Thus, no more rattle. When the door is closed, the red area gap has no tension. Then the two pieces (in red) of plastic hit/rub each other when going over bumps causing a rattle.

I put a piece of foam tape in the red gap. Problem solved.

I went at it another way. If I pushed in on the door it would stop rattling. So I add a couple of felt chair guides to each side of the door. No more rattle. My would only rattle in the summer. In the winter I guess it contracted enough to not rattle.
