OBD Scan Tool and Garmin Nav combined

This could turn out to be a really slick device...

Garmin communicates with your car via ESP | SEMA show - CNET Reviews

A module plugs into the OBD2 port and communicates with the Nuvi via Bluetooth. It gives you the data readouts and code-clearing capability of something like a ScanGauge II but integrated into a navigation device. I assume some models will have BT phone pairing so it sounds like a pretty cool swiss army knife of a gadget.

Looks like this is official. Due in March, $150 for the OBDII bluetooth dongle. Least expensive compatible Nuvi appears to be the 1260T at $250.

$400 temp gauge here I come!

Compatible with the ecoRoute software. The ecoRoute hd OBDII device lists only 1260, 1370, 1390, 1490 and 1690 as being compatible. Hopefully you're right and I'm wrong, though.

Another way to do this is get a netbook.

With a OBDII to USB adapter for scan tool functions.

And USB or bluetooth GPS receiver connected for GPS functions.

All for similar prices, you get a bigger screen and more software options makes it more flexible overall. An added bonus is a netbook can be used for so many more things than a Garmin GPS.

how about a tablet instead? netbooks are clunky and slow.

For me part of the point is a real temp gauge, and a couple other supplements to the rather primitive set of instrumentation the factory provided. For that purpose I think the Nuvi will be a nicer display. I'm not about to start driving around with a netbook velcroed to my dash. Not entirely sure that would even be legal.

This is the bomb. Coolant temp, ignition timing, voltage, even DTCs.

ecoRoute hd: Transform your nuvi into a real-time diagnostics computer
