Valve Caps - NitroFill?

The tire valve caps on my '09 Sport have a "NitroFill" logo on them. Is this the way they come from the factory? I'm curious because my dealer offered to sell me a Nitrogen fill for my tires when I bought the car, but at $10 a tire I said no thanks considering the lack of quantified benefits of nitrogen (plus without some oxygen in there, I won't be able to suck air from my tires if I ever get trapped under water). I wonder if I just got pretty valve caps, if the tires had a nitrogen fill already, or if all Fit Sports come with these caps.

Mine don't have the NitroFill logo. Just as well, actually, since I use a blend of about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1% other gases in my tires. :-)

Interesting. I wonder if my dealer just does the nitrogen on all cars and then gets some buyers to pay for it.

Special blend, eh? Kind of like gourmet coffee.

Do you really worry about having to suck air from your tires while trapped underwater?

Sucking Air

Well, I worry more about the alien invaders unleashing the huge electromagnetic pulse which will stop my inaccurate electronic MPG meter from working, but after that I keep my right upper cuspid sharpened just so I can depress the valve stem and get that air if I need it. In other words, I'm just kidding about the air.

Yeah, it's called "air". Nitrogen filled tires is one of the biggest ripoffs since the pet rock -- which most people on this forum are probably too young to remember.

I'll take gourmet coffee over nitrogen any day. I'm waiting for the hype on filling tires with helium -- less rolling resistance. On the other hand, those tiny molecules are really hard to keep captive....

Oh no! Now I have to worry about the alien invaders, underwater air, and tiny molecules escaping captivity. Will it ever end?

But seriously, it sounds like my NitroFill valve caps are not standard on all Fit Sports. Who knows, maybe my car was on the display floor for a while, where dealers often like to draw attention to these high profit dealer add-ons.

Shhhh. Don't kid about the alien invaders, they may be reading this. Tin foil hats for everyone!

i got 'em

Didn't realize i had them until i filled them up with regular air at a gas station...lol

Wasn't about to pay for a tire shop to fill up 10 more lbs of air.
Went from 35 to 45 lbs of air. Rides like SH*T but its an experiment for gas mileage....which has been disappointing.

people lie about their cars and gas mileage..i just don't believe all the sport at that get over 40mpg.

rant over

I discovered the caps while checking air pressure too. My tires were reading 32 psi, I increased to 34. I'm using a fancy digital gage, but still wouldn't expect it to be accurate to better than +/- 2 psi or so.

My Fit has only had two fillups, so MPG calculations are still approximate (how full was it when I got it?, how consistently full was it on my two fillups? - that stuff has to average out over time). But my actual MPGs have been 34.9 and then 31.9. That's suburban driving, some stop signs, some lights but not a lot of stop and go. And driving moderately - not babying it but also not driving hard. I'm about to head out on an 800 mile highway trip heavily loaded. That will be interesting.

I've put almost 3k in 3 weeks on mine. I've et to break 35 mpgs even on trips. I got the same mileage loaded 4 people and luggage going 65mph and 80mph. It just doesn't have the torque when u add any weight. Play around with your speeds and psi and see what difference you get.

dankstang - I'll give you an mpg update after the 800 mile drive this weekend. I'll only have two people, but 300 pounds or so of crapola in the back.

Mine came with green caps and was told it had nitrogen in the tires already. Not sure if it was a factory option or if dealer did it.
