Does Your Auto Transmission Whine?
#21
Dealing with the constant noise now in my 2009 fit with 120,000 miles on it. Thinking might be a bearing in trans as well(automatic) changing trans fluid tomorrow to see if that helps. If not then I guess a trans rebuild is in my future.

I have a first generation 2008 Fit and I can hear a whining noise when moving from N or P to Drive*. My mechanic says its a gearbox noise, but since the gears work fine there is no point opening it up. I have done about 80,000 Kilometres. I noticed the noise at around 60K and it is slowly getting worse. I have changed the gearbox oil regularly and the gears work fine; I can live with the noise. I guess it could be a worn torque converter or worn gearbox bearings. I will probably leave it alone until it fails and then get a quote for a repair or a reconditioned unit.
Kind regards
Chris
*I also have a 2008 first generation European Jazz that has done about 100,000 Km and the gearbox is perfectly quiet.

For those of us who bought higher mileage used Fits (or Jazz's), I wonder if prior automatic transmission fluid replacements were performed with the proper Honda DW-1 ATF (or its earlier derivative) before we became owners? Not all vehicle servicepeople might provide have this fluid on hand. Though too, some might suggest that the Honda brand product is not required. I used it.
