Many progressive lowering springs for the GE are softer than stock at the top of the spring and harder at the bottom.

This becomes a bit of problem driving at slower speeds on uneven surfaces because you are driving on the softer part of the spring, hence sway and roll.

We have found that one solution is to fit a correct size spring stiffener on the top coils like in the pic or even wrapping the top coils with hose pipe.

Progressive rate springs have been around for decades; generally they involve increasing the wire diameter with length. Due to drawdown difficulties they often are not quite as uniform as desired so even slight variations can causeuneven changes in the rate progression.
In any case once the springs are compressed to the height that holds the vehicle weight the change in spring rate around that height is slight. If you are getting lots of sway either the coil rate is undersize or your shocks are not properly sized. Some suppliers do that to 'avoid' losing the softer ride that many customers want. The stiffer the spring the harder the suspension.
Installing spring stiffeners aka as in nascar stiffens the spring altogether and does the same as installing stiffer springs. And they may or may not raise the body level due to stiffer springs depending on how much stiffer they make the spring. One advantage might be changing the length of the spring insert to change the increase in spring siffness. iNTERESTING.
