Hello, I have a 2009 Fit with 5000 miles on it. I was driving to work cruising on the highway in 4th gear and suddenly the acceleration kept going up in rpm when I had my foot off the gas pedal.

I immediately veered into the shoulder lane and put it into neutral. As soon as I put it into neutral, the engine went up to 6000 rpm since there was no longer any load on the engine. As soon as I got the car to stop I went down and pulled the gas pedal with my hand and heard a click with some motion and the rpm went back to idle. This was a scary experience. Has anyone had any type of issue like this? I figured it might be a mechanical issue with the pedal since I physically had to move it back to get it to reset. I was thinking of taking it to the dealer to get it looked at, especially since this is a safety issue. I am a little weary of driving the car again since this happened. Please help.

Weird. Definately take it to the dealer and have them fix it somehow. Just be careful on the drive there. Could it be the floor mat shifted up and pinned it? I've seen it happen a couple times even on floor mats with hooks.

 

Yeah check your mat first. If you're sure that it's not caused by the mat then take it to your dealer right away.

 

I'd be willing to wager it's a floor mat issue.

This is not the kind of defect that I'd expect to slip out of a Honda factory.

 

i have that issue all the time but with the clutch pedal but its the floor mat it always moves i hate it

Unfortunately I really don't think it was the matt that caused the issue as I physically inspected the area while pulling the pedal back to position. I'll definately get it checked out and let you guys know how it went. If anyone else has an issue similar to this please post! Thanks!

 

oh man that is pretty scary. at least you were able to think clearly and put it in neutral. i bet it could be a different story with some other drivers. do you have any modifications to areas that could have affected this?

Don't forget the engine can be turned off using the ignition key.

 

I saw one of those real-life cop shows where this happened to a lady and she led the cops on a chase until she ran out of gas. The narrator was so busy talking about how horribly awful the situation was that he never mentioned that she was too dumb to pop it into neutral or shut it off. . .

 

if your gas pedal is sticking it's not safe to drive it anywhere. i would get it towed to your nearest garage.

My guess would also have been check if there's anything down there that can get stuck under the pedal..and have the Dealership check it out. That can be really dangerous - I wouldn't know what to do in the first moment!

 

Does the steering wheel locks when you turn off the ignition?

 

It won't lock unless you are in park (on automatic of course). Try it.

 

just remember if you do turn the key off when this happens, not to turn it past the ACC position, then your steering won't lock.

You will however, have no power steering and your brakes will only have assistance for the first push of the pedal.

 

Don't forget the E-brake.

 

Nicely Handled. Turning off the ignition is only an option if you have strong forearms(although steering is easy without power assist at speed, it is very difficult at a slow roll) and a strong leg to stop the car without power breaks.

The car is at the dealer. They were surprised about the issue. They never had a similar situation.

By the way my rubber carpet are not in the way of the pedal

 

Unless the main brake is out, the e-brake won't do anything. It's weak and won't stop the car. If this happens to anyone, they should do as the OP did--neutral, stop, turn off engine. I say turn off the car last, because when you have the car on, you will at least still have power brakes. The engine will be fine at higher RPM's for a few moments. Honda's are made to rev.
