Wider tires on Base Fit

Wider tires on Base Fit
My friend just bought a Taffa White base fit with a mugen body kit and loves the wheels, but hates the 175 / 65 R15 narrow tires as they don't hold the road so good.
What are the widest all purpose tires that can safely be put on these stock rims.
He's also talking about painting the wheels white. Has anyone seen a pic of them painted white? Maybe can post a link.
Tanabe NF lowering springs are also on his mind, but there's only 160mm of ground clearance on the front skirt before the drop. Hmmmm

Just got this e-mail from Tire Rack, the question is how wide are the stock rims on the base fit. My friends car isn't here right now.
(As long as the wheel is at least 5.5" wide, you can go up to a 205/55R15. That would be noticeably wider, a little over an inch of extra width.)

Stock rim on base Fit is 5.5 inches wide.
195/60R15 should be a good choice. The diameter difference is only 1.08%
from the original 175/65R15 size.
Check this site to compare diameter differences between sizes: Tire Size Calculator - tire & wheel plus sizing

215 nah jah p'lek?

Actually, Honda said nothing larger than 175 / 65 R15.
One extrem to the other. Who's right?
Another option would be to change to a 16" wheel. How much extra ground clearance would that give over 15"?

well it wouldnt give it any if you lower the profile of the tire. you want to keep the tire/rim as close as possible to stock, so if you get a bigger rim then you want a lower profile and vice versa

I'd put 205/50x15's or 205/55x15's on the car if the wheels are at least 5.5:" rim width )inside the flanges) and the wheel offset is 53 mm stock or not less than 45 mm if aftermarket. And especially if he lowers realistically 1-1.5".
The 55's are closer to stock diameter but are heavier; the 50's are smaller diameter which helps for a heavier tire to get better mpg and acceleration,, but will mean a 3 mph error i(indicated 60 at true 57) at 60 mph and 30 miles extra per thousand odo miles.
That help?
