Unhappy Aftermarket Navi Question...

Hi all, just put a JVC navi unit in and am having a hard time figuring out what to do with the GPS antenna. Its gonna go somwhere on the front dashboard but I cant figure out how to route the cable, short of taking the entire dash apart of course. Has anyone done this? Or at least have any ideas?

on my VW I mounted the aftermarket antenna inside the dash towards the windshield and it worked fine. Just make sure there's no metal blocking it.

As for the fit IDK, mine came with NAVi.

I will see if I can find the post, but one guy here routed power for a GPS receiver through one of the tweeter openings. The RG-174u cable usually used for short GPS antenna wires would fit through a fairly small nick filed in the plastic.

edit; Found it. https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/2nd-...lutions-2.html Scroll down to post 35. There are also a couple other cable routing ideas in the thread.

I put mine inside the dash, on top of the vents (you can reach in there while the head unit's out, so you don't have to pull anything else apart). I haven't had a problem with reception yet, and I took a pretty long road trip a couple of weeks back.

So this is how I did it.
Cable is only halfway run in this pic, still have to run it behind the glove box and up to the navi unit itself.

It was real easy to run the cable, all I did was tape off the seam between the two dash panels and gently seperate them with a screwdiver.

I was using my iphone and the sun was glaring through the windshield so most of the pics I took were useless, but you should get the idea.
I'll take some pics of the rest of the install tomorrow, my JVC navi unit won't fit properly in the Honda center panel, it sticks out too far. Really wish Scosche would hurry up and start shipping their kit.

@Blythe - thats a really cool idea. Kinda surprising actually, I work in the antenna industry and usually when you obstruct the entire surface of an antenna like that it really has an impact on reception. Still a cool idea tho, keeps it well out of sight.

I think because it's just plastic above it (no metal) the interference is minimal.

You're right if it was metal it would outright kill the signal, being plastic it must just attenuate it. BTW did you have any problems installing your navi? You used the honda center panel right?

Yes, I used the Honda center panel. I jerry-rigged a temporary bracket, but I still haven't found a faceplate surround (suggestions welcome, I have the F90BT). I haven't had any problems so far!
