all you need to do is tap one wire at the cigarette lighter power, run it behind the glove box, then behind the A pillar panel then roof liner. I use the the dome for the ground. no switch needed it will turn off with the car. thats what i did to hard wire my gps.

Correct, My V1 came with a hardwire Kit when I got it (10 yrs ago) and all it does is cut power. I have it tapped into the Fuse box using an add-a-fuse and at the 12v Accessory (Cig lighter) fuse location. No cutting, splicing, etc... and it does everything I need.

Correct, that's exactly what I did but instead of going to the back of the Cig lighter socket or finding the wire, I tapped into the fusebox using an add-a-fuse. If I ever get a dedicated GPS, I'll hardwire it this way too. For now, I just use my Omnia WinMo 6.5 Phone with Garmin for GPS.
