Mileage Question?

Mileage Question?
A little background:
Last Saturday morning (7/7/09), I fill up my 09 SSM Sport AT with 10.6 gallons, (a little topping off), with Chevron 87 octane with Techron. I immediatley notice my mpg monitor measuring over 40 mpg. Throughout this week, whether city or highway I averaged 34 mpg. I filled up with the same gas last night, (7/12/09), after driving 340 miles. The gas clicked at 10.1 gallons, but I filled it to 11. The needle was just starting to dip below the empty line and the orange indicator light had come on at the 316 mile mark earlier that afternoon. Already this morning as I was driving to school the mpg monitor was showing I was averaging over 36 mpg.
I know I need to fill up a few more time with the same gas for more solid data, but is it possible I have hit some break in period? The car has over 2200 miles on it. Has anyone ever experienced regular averages of over 33 mpg (highway), whether you were buzzing around town or on the interstate on a consistent basis?
Thanks,
Dave

i dont have a fit yet, but one thing is obvious from all the forums ive checked out in researching mileage for the fit. the computer is very optimistic. it appears common for it to be 10-12% too high (4+ mpg too high is pretty common.) so, it is still useful in developing better driving habits as long as it is consistently high. still, it appears many owner are getting over 33 mpg on the highway (real calculated mileage) quite easily, except the extreme speed demons.

I average 38-40mpg (reading from the car gauge, so about 36 real mpg) on my daily driving and I was able to hit 45mpg(car gauge again, 40 real mpg) when I really tried to drive for economy. It mostly depends on the driver. I would also check your tire pressure to make sure they are not real low.

I have almost 5800 miles on my OR MT sport now, and my overall average has been about 38 mpg (hand calculated). That includes lots of highway driving, and nearly half has been on the interstates at 65 - 75 mph. The mpg meter consistently reads about 10% high, as others have reported. Right now the meter reads 44.3, so actual mpg on this fillup will be about 40. My worst tankful was 33.0, which was back in December in upstate NY driving on snow-covered roads.

1700 miles on my 09 MT sport. my mpg gauage has been as high as 52mpg and my last two fill ups were 42mpg(real) my worst is 33 and i seem to average 40+ mpg(real) in mixed driving. these cars get great gas mileage if driven right. I get jsut as good gas mileage through traffic as i do humming along at 60.

That's really outstanding gas mileage. What do you mean by "driven right?" I'm pretty conservative on the gas and on the speed, but get an honest 36 calculated mpg. I'm delighted with that but would be thrilled to see 40+. Almost all of our driving is on two-lane highways out here on the prairie.

SportMTNavi, just a couple things i do to get my mileage. i drive around DC and even in traffic i can get 40+. all about controlling ur acceleration and coasting. In traffic give yourself the two car(or more) buffer and try to maintain a steady speed without breaking, use the engine to break for you and coast when not needed. I shift to 2nd at 15mph 3rd at a little over 25mph 4th a 35-40 and over 40 to 5th. Accelerate very slowly(takes patience) dont acclerate uphill unless you have to, do all your accleration going down hill kind of hilly where i am. on interstate i do 55 in 55, 63 in 65s. Use the cruise control itll do most the work for you and get about 48-52mpg(seen on the fit not actual) Biggest factors..dont speed, dont acclerate fast, and Coast Coast Coast. Have fun^^

Read the "using DEFCO" thread in the Eco section which is usually on the first page of that section. That will help you get your MPG up
I got 38.35 avg 2 tanks on a 600 mile business trip last week.
Worst is when I work out of the house, many short trips less than 2 miles (taking the kids to school etc) just about all with cold starts. Then I dive into the high 20's

Most of the people that get good mileage are from warm climate.

todays trip
I took a trip today to look at some wheels. Didn't fit(pun intended). Anyway, it was 380 miles round trip. There was a BIG accident on I-40. Two semi trailers collided head on and stopped traffic for 3 hrs. I ran the car half the time cuz it was cold. I still got 312 miles on the tank. But typically in town my guage shows 30ish. Heres a pic I took, pretty level ground at the time:
P.S. I found myself cruising at 90 a few times. No real issues with floating for me.
