Since so many cars out there don't come with a locking fuel door, why are we so fixated or paranoid about this issue? To repeat what was said earlier, even if there WAS a locking door, it wouldn't prevent thieves from getting in there, it would only #1 notify you that someone tampered with it and #2 increase the likelihood of peripheral damage around the door from them prying it open with a screwdriver.

So you don't lock the cars doors either? The thievs copuld just use a crowbar to pry the door open or brake the window...
Heck, why not have the motor running and a note to the thievs on the steeringwheel:
"Please drive nice with this car and put it back where you found it."

Well I'm glad my car comes with a locking fuel door. The right tooled thievs would get to what they want anyway, but it stops all the small thievs that just want to have a easy and quick way to get to some "free" fuel...
But maybe there is a diffrence between EU and US in this manner...

Honestly, I think this "problem" is pretty unlikely.
The main reason someone would steal gas from a Fit is probably because they don't like you. Why anyone would target a Honda instead of another car that is likely to have a much higher payout (SUV or even a larger car with a larger gas tank) is because they don't like you.
In the end, I think someone stealing my gas is pretty unlikely and they would probably smash my window and try to steal my Nav unit before trying to syphon out my gas.

#1. Because the entire car is worth more than a tank of gas.

#2. Because not everybody leaves their doors unlocked out there. (the parallel is that a lot of cars out there don't have locking gas doors)

#3. Small thieves? How difficult is it to pry open the door with a screwdriver?

#4. When a thief tries to steal your car we have alarms and lo-jack systems for that. The fuel door doesn't. So there's a much higher risk and penalty for stealing the entire car compared to some fuel.

Does that answer your question?

Well, I took apart my fuel door last night. It's just that one screw, and the entire piece pulls out (Fuel door, plastic lining) Sorry no pictures.. Definitely need to put some kind of masking tape around the gas door to prevent scratching.

There's a lot of space inside, if you put your hand inside, you'll noticed it's a thin paper like material on the bottom. I noticed by pressing on this piece, there's definitely more than enough space to have the cable come between the paper and metal. (So no drilling required on the car)

With the unit pulled out (Fuel door, Plastic lining) It's easy to modify this piece to have a latch attached.

The problems is see now is putting back the Fuel door & Plastic lining *with the latch*, it was kind of hard to maneuver it back in place. I'm wondering if it's still accessible if I removed the left rear tail light.

Another problem is the spring action in the fuel door, it's made to stay fully shut. We would need to have some kind of tention, so without any latch the door would be at least an inch opened everytime.

I think this project is very possible now. I will take pictures next time, when I can find the parts.

I agree that Honda could have put the gas door lock on our Fits, like they do with other Hondas, but I'm not going to cry about it. If somebody wanted to do something to my car that bad, they'd put something INTO it, not take <$15 worth of gas out.

Plus, the gas door "locks" are SO easy to get into, it's not even funny. False sense of security folks. Just like security systems, locking lugs, etc.

I was afraid of siphoners so I just installed a locking gas cap. But still the door looks a lot cleaner than the other doors that have the ugly finger lip.

I actually kind of like the finger lip gas door. Less of a hassle than having to remember to pull a lever.

My last car was a 2002 Civic. One day the latch cable that opens the gas door decides to snap. Lucky me, I was on empty at the gas station and my gas light was on. I had to go through the trunk, pull back the carpet liner in order to manually open the gas door myself. Did this for a few fillups before I had time to bring her in to the dealership. Thankfully for my 100K mile warranty, Honda replaced the cable for free.

Hi all,

Just was searching fuel doors around fitfreaks and read that EUDM models fuel door locks when auto-doors lock. He even posted pics from his 07 fit:

https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/gene...nda-fit-2.html

<a href="locking fuel door picture by novaclaw - Photobucket" target="_blank"><img src="http://i575.photobucket.com/albums/s...09-30_0005.jpg" border="0" alt="locking fuel door"></a>

So the question becomes, can US owners order that solenoid and, of course, how to integrate it into the auto lock system?

Thanks

I had a civic that has fuel door release, but one time the wiring broke, and I had to jam it opened to get my car refueled before visiting the dealership. Good thing it was still under warranty.

Honda is really good in their engines but in terms of minor stuff like this they have no idea how to make it last.

I am actually thankful in my case that the fuel door on the Fit is not like that. Like above, you can always get a fuel door lock.

I'm thinking about adding a lock pin. Kind of like that solenoid system but with just a manual lever inside (trunk area). I'm going to look into that this weekend.

No issue re mishandling of locking cap/keys.....as I pump gas myself. Simply don't trust those gas jockeys.

I was looking at a 370Z at the dealership and notice it has the same push open/close mechanism as the Fit but on the Z if the doors are lock the cap doesn't open.

Wonder if the part is compatible with our Fit...

I don't believe it. Is that really true? If so then that's ridiculous.
