I'm also in the Calgary area. I bought mine from Okotoks Honda after checking out other local dealers. Decent folks, professional, not at all high-pressure or shady and I didn't drive away with that all-too-familiar "just sodomized" feeling you get from many other dealers.

1st rule: Negotiate your price ONLINE, not at the dealership. Make sure the quote includes Frieght/PDI, GST, tire tax, air-cond. (enviro) tax, any "documentation" or similar fee and the cost of any dealer accessories (ie: floor mats, "security package", 3M clear bra, tint, etc.) that you want. In other words, Know up front the exact amount of the cashiers' check you'll be bringing them, and that no other costs over and above that amount will be exchanged.

For the record, I got an '09 Fit Sport (5-spd manual) with floor mats, cargo tray, tinted rear windows, gargo shelf, 3M clear bra and "security" package for a grand total out-the-door price of $22,350. This included GST, freight/PDI and enviro taxes.

Let's reverse-engineer that figure:

Frieght/PDI = $1100. (approx)
Enviro taxes = $120.
GST= $1100 (approx)
Security package = $400 (approx.)
Floor mats = $150 (approx)
3M clear-bra = $500 (approx)
Cargo tray = $120 (approx)
Cargo shelf = $120 (approx)
Rear window tint = $300 (approx).

Let's add these numbers up: $3910.

Now let's subtract this from the total paid: $22,350 - $3910 = $18,440.

The last time I checked, MSRP for the Fit Sport MT was $19,280 here in Canada. This means I got my Fit from Okotoks Honda for about $840 under MSRP. Not bad, especially since the best I could get from another dealer was $22,800--- and that did not include tint, cargo cover, floor mats, 3M or "security" package. And that dealership had remained non-committent regarding a proposed "documentation fee"--- a fee I did not have to pay Okotoks Honda, but one that the other dealership would have tried to stick me with.

 

I did my work via email and phone. And yes, it did give me a bit of comfort knowing the exact amount to bring for the check. I wouldn't suddenly be having another $2,000 tacked on at the last minute. And I can give my insurance company preliminary information to make sure THEY don't tack on some unforeseen amount later on.

The dealers do better, I think, if they are doing options, because they can take little discounts off of those options. They can't do anything about the tax rate, but if the items cost less, the tax is a bit lower.

But they obviously cannot sell all cars and options at their cost or for even less, because they would go out of business.

I have to go drive my FIT now. Every time I chat here, I have the urge to go drive the car. Or at least go sniff that new car smell.

I need groceries anyway, I do have a purpose for driving.

you gotta work 'em hard.....economy's down....got ours last night-Sport manual $16,270 + title and reg. No taxes in Oregon! I don't know what the Canadian to US $ conversion rate is, but you can work a good fair price.

 

Canadian dollar is typically around 88-to-90 cents per US buck. But even when the dollar here in Canada was worth $1.05 US a while back our car prices weren't adjusted accordingly. MSRP was and is typically at least 15% higher here than in the states.

And now the 2010 models are starting to arrive. Guess what? The Honda dealer across the street and down a few blocks from us still has about 10 un-sold '09s on their lot, all of them bases and LX (a well-equipped but not top of the line package available in Canada) models. The majority of them are (surprise!) manual transmissions. But the stickers are still advertising full MSRP. Should be hearing radio ads soon about Honda "slashing prices to make room for the tens!" any day now methinks...

Ive been looking and shopping around A LOT. Today I got a quote at 500 under msrp, and that included the dest fee as well. Needless to say I think thats a really good offer. Im not sure about all the extra fees where I live so I emailed back asking for a OTD offer. Once I get that I will really be able to compare and contrast with what others around here are paying.

I think at this point you just have to be realistic. They are still on the CFC high as well. I think if you waited a month or two for the holiday season you might get better offers. But 1500 under msrp? I think your being a little unrealistic with that one.

 

Maybe, but not necessarily. If the manufacturer gives the dealer network a $2000 rebate (as sometimes happens) the dealers will pass that along just to clear the '09s off their lots.

 

This is true. Problem is, at least to me, there are no 09's. I'm looking to buy right now myself and I cant find jack. A few bases here and there and then some TWB sport ATs (who wants those?! ). Cant take advantage of rebates if there are no cars to use it on

 

Yeah, that would suck. I think the reason there are more here is because New Brunswick, Canada is a relatively low-income area that's hard-hit by recession even when other areas are doing well. This is due to several generations weened on socialist dogma and hopelessness. Those with ambition tend to seek their futures elsewhere.

I wonder how hard it would be to import one of our cars from Canada to Boston? With your stronger dollar it just might be worth it...

 

hmmmmm...I just might have to research that. I would think I would get taxed pretty heavy though trying to import it (or some kind of draw back, or else all of N.East/New England would be doing it). Let alone it might be more hassle than its worth? I dunno though, I'm not too in the know about importing and stuff like that. Everyone has their own way of doing the rep stuff. I have finally settled on a basic thought for myself, that I would rep if it's something helpful or useful, news or something funny.

You say you're in the Calgary area, but have NB (New Brunswick) on the avatar area, and that service does have locations in NB (not in Alberta). Looks like a good idea. Not too expensive either.

I still work in the arctic (and soon the antarctic as well) for the same Calgary-based aviation firm though. They just fly me out of NB now instead of Calgary.

 

I purchased a used 2009 Fit Sport last week for $15,300 plus tax and title. Dealer wanted another $600 for fees, but I said no. The vehicle was used, but had less than 6K miles. Looks like new. Carmax seemed to want new car price for used Fit. I purchased from a Kia/Mazda dealership.

After getting to really examine and compare to my 2007 Toyota Crollla, I'm glad I didn't pay more. Not too impressed with the interior..lots of hard plastic, etc. Vehicle drives well and so far great gas mileage, but I'm not too impressed with the interior. Good luck with your purchase.

What was the 'security' package? Is the security system only an option in Canada?

In the states as you may know, the base fit comes with the immobilizer and the remote entry (but no remote entry keys), the fit sport comes with the immobilizer, remote entry, remote entry keys, and security system already installed as a standard option.

So if it's a standard option in CA too, I'm wondering what they 'included' in this security package..

I could think they might have added wheel locks, but what else??

 

The base fit does NOT come with remote entry, etc. Only the SPORT comes with that stuff. It's extra cost for us Base buyers. And it's unnecessary for Sport buyers.

 

One more BIG thing...while looking at the options in the US, I noticed that stick Sports will NOT come with cruise control for 2010.

If that is important to you, be sure to verify what is available in Canada for 2009 and 2010.

Uhm, yes it does. You only don't get the actual key with the broadcast dongle, which is kind of lame. The electronics to make it work are already in the car.. if they weren't, you would need to add a wireless receiver and hook it up to the electronic locks, etc. To 'add' remote keyless entry all you need to do is buy the key and press a few buttons in sequence. You don't need to add anything to the car itself all you have to do is buy the remote transmitter key which some people have reported being able to find for as little as $23 or $40, and go through a simple sequence.

I don't know what "etc." you are referring to as the only other thing that I mentioned the Base fit coming with in this thread is the Immobilizer, which it does.

 

I see what you're saying. The ability to hook up the remote lock/unlock/alarm is IN the car, just needs something to activate it.

Does this mean the alarm IS there too? Or not?

Do the lights flash and the horn beep when locking or unlocking using the link you provided?

It's not advertised as being there, it's not shown as included equipment. You need to HAVE something and DO something to make it functional.

It would be like having the radio not come with the radio code, so it is always off and doesn't work. You'd have to have something (the code) and do something (enter the code) to make the stereo work.

Otherwise it doesn't DO anything. The radio or remote unlock/lock.

 

The "security package" in Canada is not the same as the anti-theft system installed at the factory. Instead, this refers to a dealer accessory that includes (among other items) a lug nut at each wheel (which requires a specialized socket to remove) and window etching to better identify your car if it's stolen and to keep chop shops from selling the glass.

It's an un-necessary scam if you ask me. The lug nuts notwithstanding, nothing in this package really prevents theft--- it's just a heavily-marked-up dealer add-on that's as useless as it is over-priced.

The problem is that many dealers install this "accessory" before the car is sold (or at least say it's been installed) so that the customer thinks it's too late to refuse it. My car was already sold to another customer at another dealership who accepted the package. But she bailed when she realized it was not the Tidewater Blue she ordered but rather, the Blue Sensation she hated. (Fortunate for me, since I wanted the Blue Sensation in the first place). My dealer made a trade with this other dealership to get me that car.

But back on topic: As for the security package, I did an end run around the entire scam by simply closing the deal online with an out-the-door price that equaled about $830 below MSRP, rendering this $400 scam a moot point.
