How does the fit drive in the snow?

Tomorrow I get to dig my new 09 Fit Sport out of the snow. I'm curious what other peoples experiences are with it in the snow?

The Fit is as good as any other front-wheel drive car in the snow, but with the same limitations as any vehicle that does not have limited slip differential--- if one drive wheel is spinning on ice you're going nowhere.

Other than that, the anti-lock brakes operate as advertised, ie: they won't lock up and will allow you to steer under hard braking on slippery surfaces, but they won't make you stop any quicker than if anti-lock wasn't there.

Also, all-season tires--- aren't. Especially if yours is the sport model, which comes with the wider tires.

Do yourself a favor and get winter tires.

i realize this is a ge thread but with my gd i have had better luck going up a pretty steep gravel driveway covered in snow in reverse. it puts more weight on the drive wheels in the front. if i try going head first i will only make it halfway up before the wheels loose traction

Excellent idea. One problem though if you live in Canada: Quebec (your province) now requires vehicles to be equipped with winter tires by law, which means tire dealers there have been usurping supplies from other provinces in order to meet the demand.

Buyers in the rest of Canada have been having problems finding the winter tires they need. This was over a month ago, not sure if supplies have yet been replenished.

I can assure you that there's a shortage here too. Especially with the size used on the Fit (uncommon size). I had to wait almost 2 months for my Blizzaks.

I have the Fit Sport with Nav/VSA. I also put 4 snow tires on it and I couldn't be more pleased. We have record amounts of snow and it handles like a charm....better than the 05 Ford Escape 4x4 I traded. The Escape would go through more snow, but it didn't handle the icy city intersections nearly as well. I think the VSA makes a difference along with the snow tires....sometimes when I brake or accelerate at an icy intersection the VSA symbol will flash on the dash....no skiding, very little sliding, good response and no fish tailing....I am LOVING this car!

I noticed others are having trouble obtaining the Blizzaks - try Tirerack.com....mine arrived in days....now I'm wanting the custom mats, but I can't remember where (online) they're available!

Enjoy your Fit!

Do you have AT or MT? If it's the former, trade it in and buy the latter

In all seriousness, I just took mine into the mountains, where it was snowing. Zero problems, although I drove like a grandma the whole time.

I have the MT. I'm not going anywhere though this morning, everything is coated in thick ice right now. I don't even want to try since I've only had my fit for 2 days. hehe

I wonder if the Navi can be put in later by dealership? Or if it has to come from the factory that way.

Snow tires are key with the Fit. I think the GEs might have a little better luck right out the gates with the heavier 16" wheels and slightly heavier curb weight. Last year with the stock all seasons I had a bitch of a time but it was somewhat manageable. This year I put Yokohama Ice Guards on and it's like night and day. My Fit was going through 10 inches of snow like it was nothing. Inclines are no problem either. Give the stockers a try though see if it's on par with what you're expecting. If you don't to have to worry at all when going out in bad weather get snow tires.

I'm sure the dealership can put in the Navi, but why would you? There are plenty of aftermarket systems that are more impressive and will probably end up being half the price if you install yourself (or even take it to a car audio shop). I'm planning on getting a Pioneer AVIC-F90BT or AVIC-F900BT soon. Do a search on here for either one of those; lots of people are looking into them.

Yeah do what he said. I have navi, and am pretty dissapointed with it. The only reason i got it was because it was the only fit i could find at the time and i didnt want to wait. Oh well.

A couple tips:
-More traction going uphill in reverse; yep, works great
-Starting on a snowy hill? Turn the wheel to the side to start off
-Use the start in second feature of the sport
-Use the paddles with the A/T; gives better control, and avoids unwanted shifts
-Get winters and rims

I've stuck with my original tires and have had no issues at all with the snow. I know the official winter tires would be great but I hate to spend the $ when most of the snow will be gone in a couple months.

NO bs, with my 07 I towed a snowmobile on a trailer all around the lake superior snow belt (like Buffalo NY basically)

snow tires (especially studded ones) are flat out freaking amazing.

With out them still not too bad, frozen ruts are a bit of a biotch because the fit has a narrower track than a lot of the ruts.
