USB w/HD Instead of Flash Drive?

I've got a 16GB USB flash drive I'm using in the Fit, but I want more capacity, at least 50GB. Anyone have any luck with using a USB-powered HD in the Fit?

There are threads about this if you search...there were not any successes if I recall.

Plus I have a feeling you wouldn't want your hard drive and it's delicate platters taking the bumps of a rough road. It would not last too long.

I'd go with a 32gb flash drive. I am.

Yeah, I should have searched first. Found this thread:

Looks like some people had success. I would have minimal concerns using a rugged 2.5" drive in this application, or a 1.8".

Love my 32gb Kingston, works perfect right out of the box.

I think as long as the drive gets sufficient power from the port and is formatted FAT32 you'll likely have success.

you could always find a small enclosure and get a solid state drive.

Newegg.com - Express Card, Solid State Disk, Solid State Hard Drive

Stay away from mechanical drives if you want long term reliability.

There are 64 GB USB flash drives.

I've been using this...

It's a 32gb Express Card that's just flash memory, but it has a USB port at the end. Small velcro tabs keep it secured inside my upper glove box to keep it from banging around.

I prefer thumb drives since you can just stick it in your pocket when you leave the car. Specially if the car is going to be out in the sun for an extended period. Something you can't do with other larger portable drives.

You can get 16gb thumb drives now for under $20 if you shop around.

  • Music collection > 50 GB - don't want the hassle of building specific playlist to cram "essentials" on to a smaller capacity device
  • Don't want to transcode down and lose quality to get it all onto a smaller stick
  • 64GB USB's cost $100+ and generally have really crappy write performance as compared to disks
  • Large disks are cheaper than USB's

Few external hard drives will work. Most that do are 1.8" and expensive (example: aegis mini usb) rather than the more common/cheaper 2.5" size drives like the WD Passport series which I own (they don't work). I ended up getting a 32GB Kingston flash drive for $47 shipped from newegg.com, and just left out a few gigs of stuff I don't listen to that often.

Remember: There is no "search" function with any USB device, aaannnnnd that's kind of a pain. Honestly for the time and money you're going to spend on finding and formatting an external drive that works (the vibrations and extreme temperatures would probably kill it sooner than later anyway), you would be better off getting an iPod. (This coming from someone whom is kind of anti-iPod!)

I too was drawn to the possibility of having access to all my collection at once (on the cheap), but again without a search function, knowing how slow the Navi loads/scrolls through folder info from USB....I would definitely consider an iPod down the line. My .02
