Noise from the rear

I have a noise coming from the rear of the car when I hit a sharp bump. It sounds like the hatch is not latched but it is. When I close the hatch, I do not hear this sound so I don't think something inside is making that noise.

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Is the rear license attached with all 4 screws?

Yeah, I did that last week. That actually was making a noise also, but was a different sound and went away when I put the 4 screws in.

have you tried putting some kind of material between the car and the license plate? dampening material that's used for trucks for sound systems works great to put between the plate and car to help reduce any rattle that might be because of that.

I can try that but it sounds more like "thunk", like if the hatch was closing but it's latched. I had the license plate noise when I got my new plates and it was a different sound.

I need to get back there and have someone drive over some bumps.

can it be the tire iron where the spare is?

That's a possibility. I will investigate tonight when I get home. (Wife's driving it today)

Also check the jack, it is wedged behind the spare at the back of the well. If it comes loose you'll hear a low thunk each time you hit a bump.

Check that the spare is securely fastened in the well. Also check the rear wheels.

Could be bottoming your rear shocks if you're going too fast over those bumps.

No, it's not that. It happens whether you are going fast or slow. I would definitely know if I bottomed the shocks out.

What about the seatbelt in the ceiling?

Did you also check the pocket where you might have a roadside kit or something like that?

I had a rattle but found out that it was the small tool kit I carry in my trunk.

In your driveway, open the rear hatch and push down where the latch area. Plenty of grip and space there, give it a good bounce a few times. Might hear something? Check that the rear seats are secured as well, it is easy to overlook the lower area where the bar attaches into the holding clip. Did you have a new muffler put on? I am thinking the optional muffler package and the dealer did not tighten the clamps completely.

I'm getting the same issue only my rear passenger side is "thunking" when a load is placed on it (pulling away from a light, turning a corner, going over a bump at any speed). It doesn't happen all the time, I had the dealer look at it but they said everything looked a-okay. Weird.

Try this...open up your hatch and then slightly hit the edge of the plastic trim on the inside of the hatch and see if it rattles against the metal part of the hatch door. Mine was doing that and so I took some weather stripping and created an area of cushion. I put just about an inch on both sides. Now I can hit that area very hard and it will not rub/rattle/clunk. That was my rear bump issue...might be yours.

Have you checked the point where your rear seats clip/latch when in the upright position? Both of my rear seats rattle in this spot. I have been trying different remedies to fix this.
