Well... let's see. As I said, I don't want a black car, and there there is the little matter that Boise is 700 miles away. Why would I do this when I can get $500 more at the closest dealership, which happens to have a good reputation? Plus... I'll have to get it re-smogged when I get it back here to the tune of ~$100 plus extra hassle ( I know because I bought my STI in OR in March... but there I saved $2500.)

Bottom line, I concluded pretty quickly when I began shopping that the Fit is so cheap I can't possibly save enough money by traveling to make a long trip worth my time.

price

I got mine for msrp plus 175 for sidemolding. When the finance guy quoted me 1700 for the extended sevice war and 495 for the fabric protection I refused to sign the papers saying the reason I buy honda is because you don't need the warrenty and if your telling me I need this warrenty hondas must not be what they used to be. I told him he must have the worst job in the world if his job is to screw people like that I pretended to be outraged and got very loud and obnoxious. He offered to drop the price to 1000 and i acted even angrier because he just proved to me he was triing to screw me. I bought the warrenty on line afor 890 and when I went up to get my sidemolding I proudly showed it to them and started negotiating for my ridgeline. Turn the tables around it is fun!

I used cartelligent (cartelligent.com) and got a car at MSRP in 24 hours. It cost $300 and they found me a nav MT Storm Silver in under 24 hours at MSRP in the bay area.

I'd never used a broker before, and I've got to recommend it to anyone tired of the dealer "market adjustment" and the hassle of playing 100 phone calls to find the one you want.

You never deal with the dealership, you just pop into their offices in Saualito, sign some paperwork, and drive off in the car that they get from the dealer and keep in their covered garage.

Woman named Leigh was incredibly friendly, thoughtful and helpful with the whole process.

State: Southern California - Honda of Pasadena
Model: 09 Honda Fit Base M/T - Black
OTD Price: $15800

I had a 98 Ford Windstar trade-in for $1500, the dealer gave me little markup at beginning, OTD $17300 With Windstar trade-in. And I asked them to lower the price or I gonna walk away. Seems that works

State: South Carolina (Honda of Columbia)
Model: Fit Sport 5MT
OTD: 17268

Breakdown:
16730 (vehicle + 670 destination)
199 doc fee
39 title
300 tax

Honda of Columbia was awesome. They ordered the exact car that I wanted. I didnt have to haggle to get MSRP. Financing was a breeze. They offer lifetime powertrain warranty to the original owner for free (like that stuff ever breaks). No surprises. Highly reccomended.

My Quotes

Locations: Within 50 miles of Hackensack, NJ
Model: Base Manual, no options/features

Quote1 - Route 22 honda:
Car: $14,500
Dest: $670
Total: $15,170

Quote2 - Garden State Honda:
Car: $14,550
Dest: $675
Total: $15,225

Quote3 - Nardy Honda
Car, Dest, & Floormats: $15,276

MSRP shows at $15,220 and INVOICE at $14,714 online.

So with tax and title, the cheap dealer should be:
$15,170 + $1,061.90 + 60 = $16,291.90

Those are calling around prices. Besides tax and tag, they promised me no other fees. I haven't visited a dealer yet but plan to this weekend. Does anyone know if I should be getting close to invoice or below? Or is this a good deal just under MSRP? It always seems you can go down atleast $1000 from wherever you start but not sure... feedback appreciated. If I dont get any feedback, ill try by luck and post what I end up paying.

Thanks!

Hi Dmunevar,

There's a LOT of demand for the Fit. It's about the only car on the market whose sales are currently increasing.

Based on this thread, I think less than half have actually paid as low as MSRP - most have had to pay more. I had to email about 10 dealers before finding one who would sell at MSRP. There are a couple of people who've reported getting their Fits for maybe $100 or $200 under MSRP.

But I may be missing something with your quotes - per 2009 Honda Fit - the Official Honda Web Site , the MSRP for the Base Manual Fit, no options, is $14,550; Base Auto, no options is $15,350.

Most of the reports are pre-Stock market crash - so it's quite possible that you'll do somewhat better than the rest of us.

Its hard to say in these uncertain economic times if this is a great deal but it sounds good.
A month ago you were lucky to get MSRP especially on a base unit but sales of all vehicles are down and dealers are willing to deal just to make a sale.
If you need a car now this price sounds good. I bet if you wait for a month the price will get a little bit lower but not much.
Be careful when you read "out the door" prices. Different states have different sales tax and license fees.

We love our fit and got our 09 sport navi for $380 below MSRP on Sep. 6th.

My sales guy was great. No pressure at all.
Price includes Tax, TTL, DOC Fee. Also includes Floor Mats, Cargo Tray, AND 7 yr 100,000 mile warranty. This dealership also charges their $499 Care Package and $199 for a hand painted pinstripe (which actually looks really good, and they wouldnt budge on). All-in-all I felt good about the deal. Imean, considering the wait time for ordering...

Dont be suprised; your dealer will not budge too far from MSRP. Thats okay. Just talk them down on their accessories and warranty.

Thumbs up $500 under MSRP!

Tafetta White Fit Sport (Auto. Trans.)

Purchased at Pohanka Honda in Fredericksburg, VA through the Costco auto program. I originally went in to look at '08s a few months ago, and the pricing at that time (before the '09s hit the dealerships) was $300 over invoice, which happens to be $300 below MSRP. When the new models came in, Costco and the dealership had not yet worked out the new pricing program, and of course the price of the cars increased a few percent (~3%).

I negotiated an additional $200 drop in the price in order to split the cost of the $399 'processing fee'. I told the salesperson that I thought $400 was excessive and wanted $200 accessories to compensate. She offered to reduce the price of the car $200 instead. She said the 'processing fee' is firm, but the price would be negotiable. She was great to work with, and very helpful.

$17079.28
($670 destination fee)
+ $399 - processing fee
+ $524.35 - VA sales tax
+ $10 - purchasers online systems filing fee

Sub Total - $18012.63

+ $48.75 - New tags
+ $17.08 - Dealer business license tax

Total - $18078.46 ($500 under MSRP)
and I got a free cargo tray to boot!

$8000 down payment, and a 5.25% rate on the 5 year loan (the car will be paid off well before then). Captial One Auto through Costco was giving me
5.47%, and Honda Finance was able to do a bit better.

Pay the $50 Costco membership fee, and use the auto program! It's worth it! Then, if you have no Costco convenient to you, or don't want to shop there, you can cancel the membership at ANYTIME and receive a 100% refund!

Edit: I also got the pinstriping for thrown in for free, and found a set of the wheel locks in my glovebox!

I would nail them down on all their fees. Pretty much every dealer will include a documentation/processing fee of ~100-200. Some will jack those fees up to make more $$. Make sure you have a quote with a complete list of fees before pulling the trigger. Keep in mind that you can negotiate to lower doc fees and such.
Also, make sure that they aren't going to put a "care package" on it that amounts to nothing more than a 500$ wax and scotchguard job. Watch out for pinstripes, etc as well. At some dealers, this is the only way they sell cars, and they make alot of money doing it.

Purchase Update

Dealing - 10/27/2009 for pickup 10/28/2009
Ok, all the dealers I called lied and didn't have a Base Manual. Many tried to bait and switch me to an auto. Turns out I liked the sport body much more so we started looking for a sport manual. I only found one at Honda of New Rochelle, NY. The guy started by saying the car was 17700 but he would give us a discount so he lowered it to 17009. (I thought the 9 was cute too...) I decided to offer between Inv and MSRP so I told him 16,500 and he accepted the offer right away. I feel he probably would have accepted 200 less so if I did it again I would have offered 16,000 and gone up from there. Here is a break down of the price:

Total Vehicle Price: 16500
Sales tax (7% NJ Tax): 1155
Waste Tire Management Fee: 12.50
Dealer Optional Registration and Title Certification Fee: 45 (Says I can opt out of this fee but $45 to not wait in the line at the tag office is ok. Dealer says they have the tag and everything.)
Total: $17,712.50

We went on a Sunday which I don't recommend. The banks are closed so they couldnt quote us a rate. Doesn't really matter though, I applied for a Costco Auto Loan and have a check arriving in the mail at 5.52% APR up to $14,000. We're going to pay the rest in cash. For all of you with low self-esteem with your credit, mine was pretty bad. My score is 694 and in good standing but I just paid off a charge-off for $4000 only 6 months ago and have another charge-off for $120 which I refuse to pay Verizon for. I would really suggest getting a Costco Auto loan check, before you go purchasing. And finally, I checked for insurance for me and my wife for 2 cars. I checked Geico, Esurance, and progressive. Progressive had a much better rate for us. I really hope my experience helps someone out in their purchasing!
