2009 Fit Engine Swap

2009 Fit Engine Swap
October 2019 I did a head swap (thread here: https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/2nd-...head-swap.html), but should have taken the whole motor out and done the rings. Now I have a broken ring I guess, so I picked up a questionable junkyard motor and am checking it out. The motor supposedly has 68,000 miles and “worked until the wreck,” but photos of the “wrecked” car suspiciously show no damage, so I’m going to be as through as possible in determining the condition of the item. The

Although the junkyard claimed to have drained the oil from the motor, luckily they had not.
I filtered the oil through a paint strainer to check for metal bits. The oil seemed fine, used but not gritty.
No issues found.
I also did a VIN search on the car it came out of, still suspicious of the lack of body damage. I learned that it has around 20,000 more miles than the junkyard claimed and was sold to them at auction by an insurance company. It had been totaled for “minor undercarriage damage,” which also seems weird, but does explain why the car appeared fine from all visible angles.

Not that'cha asked, but I've got this kit for pulling balancers:
Looks like its not available anymore though..
can also recommend this impact: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-8-Am...Wrench/3307992
The engine you've got there looks nice, as does the oil. Don't think it's too fresh, do you?
Anyways, keep up the good work. Great thread!
EDIT: I'm relieved to see that they didn't armor-all all over the intake plenum.

Thanks!
I have a Dewalt that supposedly delivers 700 ft lbs max torque and 1200 ft lbs breakaway torque, but it didn’t manage. I biked to Lowe’s, but the 1000 ft lb Kobalt air tool they supposedly had in stock—3 actually—were MIA. I got a lesser one and unsurprisingly it was of no use. I had to have a larger friend perform the task manually. Of course he had no trouble. The pulley came right off and now I have the timing chain cover off.
No power tools needed by the big person.
Pulley off.
Water pump pulley and timing chain cover off.

Sounds like you're squared away on impacts 😂 I'm sorry they didn't work out for you. Those big nuts remind me of days in the service maintaining tracked vehicles. Used a cheater-pipe repurposed from an old basketball hoop when trying to get exterior nuts off of track that wasn't washed after a cruise on the beach. Not too relevant, but I just picked up my first compressor a couple weeks ago. An old Pel-Air 840C duplex dental compressor from an office that went out of business.. got it with the air dryer for $200. Gonna make some gaskets for it so it stops leaking and start trying out some pneumatic tools. Pretty excited!
Got the plumbing snake in there too. Lotsa happy memories.
My first time seeing the Fit's timing chain set-up. Do the black plastic on the guides seem to be in good shape? (no flaking off when you run a thumb/thumbnail down it)

No, but I’m replacing it anyway.
Today I removed the crankshaft and pistons. Mysteriously, rod #2 has burned oil on the bearing.
Bearing cap bridge ready for removal.
Bearing cap bridge and bolts.
Crankshaft out.
Upper connecting rod bearings exposed.
Burned oil on upper rod bearing 2.
Rods and pistons.
Cylinders look good.
Cylinders from beneath.

Block is ready to install
Sorry for the pause! Here are some pix of the oil pump.
Measured the wear—oil pump was essentially new spec.
Cleaned it up.
Reassembled with new o-ring.
Oil pump reinstalled.
Oil/air separator cleaned up, also installed new PCV.
Oil pan back on and ready to go!
Now the fun part, getting it into the car. I will remove the head from the car and then the block, then install this block and the original head. I plan to do this from the top.
